Notes for John Purves:
Myrna Holcomb Lazenby, Oct. 8, 1989:
In 1765, a young man of 19 years of age sailed into the horbor in Charleston, S. C.He was born in Scotland in 1746.His name was John Purves.Ten years later, he married Eliza Ann Pritchard in Charleston. They moved to Edgefield County, in the "up country" of South Carolina.Shortly thereafter, the Revolutionary War broke out and John enlisted in the South Carolina Militia, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After the War, John held the office of Justice of the Peace and seemed to be a person of some consequence in the community, as his name is mentioned often in the records of the area.
John and Ann had six children, four boys and two girls. The eldest son, born in ca. 1777, was also named John.John, Sr. died in 1792.His wife remarried but died in 1813.John, Jr. sold lhis share of the extate to his brother, Charles, and turned his back on South Carolina and headed west.
He may have fought in the War of 1812, as there is a John Purvis listed as being a veteran of that war.At any rate, he turned up in Marion County, AL in 1819.He was then married to elizabeth Lovett Purves.Their eldest child, Thomas Melville, was born there in 1820.John and Elizabeth had nine children, six boys and three girls. When Malville was 10 years old, they moved to Mississippi. The census showed them in Marion County in 1830.Melville must have remembered how good the country seemed, since he brought his family back to this area in 1870.John died in Jasper County in 1862 and Elizabeth died there in 1868.
Melville married Dorothy Abney, or Dollie as she was called, in Neshoba County in 1843.They were married 67 years and had eight children two of whom died young.Their eldest, Joseph Abney Purves, fought in the civil war, but caught the measles on the way home from the war and died.Sarah Elizabeth married Andrew Clark.John Boardman married Nancy Baxter.Oliver Searcy married jane Baxter.Susan Margaret married Plummer Ladner.Martha Catherine (Cattie) married henry Fillingame. All of these are buried in Coaltown Cemetery except Sarah, who is buried in the cemetery next to the Methodist Church.
Melville moved to this area in 1870 and homesteaded the land where Purvis now stands. When the railroad needed a right-of-way through here, Melville gave them the land. They in turn named the settlement Purvis in his honor.Melville encouraged the people to settle here, sometimes giving them lots on which to build. He and Dorothy were widely known and respected in the community.Dollie was a doctor and traveled many miles in her buggy tending the sick and delivering babies. She was said tohave delivered over 100 babies without losing a mother or child.
This spring, John Purves was approved as a Revolutionary veteran by the DAR.Lisa Lazenby was accepted as his descendant and any of the family can now make an application through her number.
