                     JAMES WILLIAM WYLIE

James William Wylie was born September 6, 1842 in Canada. He lived his childhood around Penetang and Montreal, Canada. When he was about sixteen years of age he ran away from home and came to New York, State. He had relatives living there.
He became an American citizen in the State of New York. He returned to Canada to visit his family after 1860. He remained there for several months and it seems he and his father did not agree so he returned to the United States. His oldest brother returned to the States with him. (It is believed his name was, "John".
They enlisted in the Confederate Army in December 1964 at Fairfield, South Carolina. He was enlisted by Captain Dowkins and was a Private Company E. 7th. Regt. C. S. He was paroled at Greensboro, N. C. (Note: Daddy said James and John both enlisted in the Confederate Army, but I did not find a record on John. James William Wylie was paroled at Greensboro, N. C. May 2, 1865.
Daddy said "John" contacted yellow fever at the close of the war and died. Aunt Alease told me that Uncle George said they had a disagreement and went different ways.
After the Civil War, Grandpa Wylie returned home for a visit.
When he returned to the States, he married Elizabeth Manning at Bay St. Louis. After a short marriage, she died.
He married Alice Almandra Purves at Purvis, Mississippi. Two sons were born there, George and James Jr.
I do now know how they came to Texas, or what route they used. But the first stop was probally in Purvis, Texas to visit her parents, James Morgan and Mary Ann Parker Purves. Alice Alamandra's youngest sister lived there also. Her parents had left Purvis, Mississippi when Susan the baby daughter had married John Ruben Turney and came to Erath County, Texas.
James William Wylie, Sr. was a blacksmith by trade. They lived in Erath County for several years as Aunt Mary was born at Carlton, Texas and Katherine Roxana was born in Erath County, Texas. She died at Dublin and was buried in the old Dublin Cemetery. About twenty years ago the cemetery was vandalized and her marker was destroyed and the grave lost. John Wesley Wylie was also born when they lived in Erath County. He was born December 3, 1897.
After the death of Katherine Roxana Wylie, James William Wylie, Sr., moved his family by wagon to East Texas. He worked at his trade as he moved to East Texas so they lived in several towns. They moved to Groveton and John Wesley Wilie died May 8, 1903 and is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery. He has a marker at this grave but it has been broken and needs to be replaced. They probably came to Groveton as Grandma's oldest sister, Jane Kennedy lived there.
They lived at Chester New year's Eve 1905 and Grandpa ran a blacksmith ship until his death. James William Wylie, Sr. died September 1, 1918 at Chester, Texas, and is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery near Chester, Tyler Co., Texas.
We know little of Grandpa Wylie's family. His father was a brick mason by trade. He came from Ireland. Great grandmother was Scottish and her maden name was McFarland or McFranklin. I do not know if they were married before coming to Canada.
Grandpa Wylie had sisters and brothers. I believe their names were Jane, Almira (Grandpa's twin sister,) Phillip, John and Charlie. There could have been other children as Daddy said Grandpa Wylie spoke of the "Girls" at home.
John Wylie, Grandpa Wylie's brother that came to the United States with him, was married. He and his wife were sepasrated and it is believed that he had one son.
