BOY IS KILLED BY CAR

While on his way to the stove works carrying a basket of lunch to his father, Carl Speigel, 13 years old, 418 Olive street, was run down and almost immediately killed. He was riding a bicycle and was struck by Inbound Main street car No. 46 just as he was crossing Main street at William.
The car struck the bicycle full length, knocking the tad down and dragging him for a distance of about ten feet. The wheels did not pass over the body of the boy but he died two minutes after having been hit from internal injuries. Only two small cuts were visible on the right side of his body and several bruises about the head and face. Mrs. Pat Carroll, wife of Saloonkeeper Pat Carroll, at Main and Sycamore streets, was an eye-witness to the accident and immediately telephoned for Johann's ambulance. Life was extinct; however, and the boy was taken to the morgue. Later the remains were removed to Schaeffer's undertaking establishment, where they were prepared for burial.
Several witnesses to the accident claim that the car was going at a high rate of speed as it rounded the curve when the lad was hit and that the motorman failed to signal his approach. Others declare that the lad was riding his wheel at a fast clip and that when he was struck, he realized his danger and screamed for help. Drs. Cain and McCutchan together with Coroner Laval were at the scene of the accident but their efforts to aid the lad before he died were of no avail.
The car was in charge of J. L. Haas, motorman, and J. L. Sullivan, conductor.
