Notes for V
AN MARION BULLARD:
Van Marion Bullard was born, raised and lived his entire life in Pacific County, Washington. His house still exists on the location of his farm in Menlo, Washington. Some of his descendants live nearby. Van Marion Bullard wrote of his own life on March 15, 1952 as follows:

"This matter of history is written for Job Bullard, who is the father of V. M. Bullard and mother is Elizabeth Martha Bullard.
My mother and father lived on the old Job Bullard homestead, and the Indians would come up the river In canoes every summer to old place and trade different things they got at the store in Bruceport, Tom Crellen was running the store at that time, and they traded calico at 5 cents a yard for sweet apples. or potatoes and they used to dig potatoes for us. The old Bucks would dig them and the Squaws would pick them up. They would fish and smoke the fish. They camped on the Old Lilly place and hunted elk and smoked the Elk meat and put up tons of it and take canoe loads back down to Bruasport.
At that time the Willapa river was teeming with salmon more than could be used. The old Indian Women washed for my mother, we had a place down at the river called 'the washing place',and they would go down there and wash.
During one fishing trip, when an Indian was washing for my mother, they had two little boys that started playing with the faning mill that we used to clean wheat with and while the older boy was turing the crank the younger boy got his finger pretty badly mashed up in the cogs, the old Indian mother was so mad that she would have killed the older bov if I hadn't taken the club away from her, that she was pounding the older boy over the head with.
They had no washboards to wash the cloths with so they used a round stick to punch the cloths to wash them.
I was with my father on the old homestead until I was 21 yrs. old. After that during the rest of my life time from 1882 it seemed like I was a pretty busy man. During the early days we elected a township road supervisor and for several years maybe 8 or 10.
I Was Supervision of a crew of men building roads. After this I went into the Oyster business with a man by the name of George Brown, who was one of the best men that ever lived. I bought into a furniture factory in Raymond, Wash, and had charge of that for several years. Later I was game wardon for 4 years. I worked as state foreman, building bridges for 8 years. I laid in the Good Samaritan hospital in hospital in Portland for over a month pretty tough but all came out right side up with good medical aid, before that time I rented my property in Menlo to various renters and came back to it later on, and found things pretty badly neglected which was left of the property.
Served as County Commissioner for 6 years with one of the good men of Pacific county, Mr. Roessler and when I came into office Pacific County was about $90,000 in debt, third year after we entered into office we had a little fire and burned up the mortgage and found ourselves about $150,000 to the good. During that time, we built 54 miles of road with all our good help.
When I was a boy my greatest pleasure was to shoot bears out in the orchard north of the old homestead, and I will not attempt to tell you how many bruins, my old Winchester helped me turn up their toes, especially during sweet apple time Those days we did not have to buy a hunting license or fishing licence. I used to put in considerable of my time, with the old Winchester.
I have not spoken of my family yet. In the year of 1885 I married Rosa M Wilson, daughter of William C. Wilson, all told we had a family of 8 children. Florence, Lorena and Jean daughters and Ivan, Trevor, Aubrey, Kenneth and one boy died in infancy. Children all are married and first class American citizens."
