From Clinton Lineage by Howard C. Clinton: " William Clinton, the youngest son of Sir Henry Fynes Clinton by his second wife, was born in England in about the year 1636. Following in his father's foot-steps William, at an early age, became a royalist. He held a commission as a Cavalier in the army of Charles I; and after King Charles I was beheaded in 1649, while not yet fourteen years of age, William joined the cause of Prince Charles Stuart, the son of the heheaded King. William Clinton was one among the few who escaped with their lives after the Battle of Worcester in September of 1651. He fled to Ireland for refuge; settled in Longfors; married Lady Elizabeth Kennedy of the family of the Earl of Cassilis of Scotland; and they had a son whom they named James Clingon. William Clinton dies early in 1669." page 129
