Edmond received a Land Grant in Ohio for Service during the Revolutionary War.

Edmund TERRILL [Parents] was born on 21 Mar 1740 in , Orange Co., Virginia. He died on 1 Jun 1784 in , Culpeper Co., Virginia. Edmund married Margaret WILLIS on 26 Nov 1760.

Reference the Terrill Bulletin by Elsberry. Dates said to be from old bible. I have the complete record of his service in the Revolutionary War from official company muster rolls and pay rolls as found in the National Archives. Enlisted on 27 Jan, 1777, rank as Sgt., in Capt. John Gillison's Company. Served in battles of Guilford Court House in N.C. in 1781, and in Hobkirk's Hill Battle. Muster rolls show him at Valley Forge throughout the terrible winter there. Discharged from 3 year enlistment in March of 1780. His will is found in W.B.C. p. 91, Culpeper Co., Va., 1 June, 1784 - 15 Nov 1784. He also is listed as having served in Capt. John Steed's company, 2nd VA Brigade as per "Virginians in the Revolution", p. 764, by Gwatmey. He was Captain in the Culpeper Militia 1779-1780. Another record I saw gives him a son named Reuben, who m. Mildred Woods. I am not sure of this.

Here is a record of his actual service from pay slips:

Edmund Terrill Rev. War Records
From Official Company Muster Rolls and Company Pay Rolls
As found in the National Archives

Jan. 27, 1777...Enlisted for 3 year term. Rank is listed as Sgt. in all below records, and he is found in Capt. John Gillison's Company in all below entries, except the last, regardless of regiment or commander. Location from this enlistment date to below first muster roll is unknown, and may have been inactive until March.

Mar. 28 to Dec., 1777...10th VA Regiment, commanded by Col. Edward Stevens, who is a Brig. Gen. later in the war.

Jan. to Mar., 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Major Samuel Hawes. Maj. Hawes is later found as a Col., commanding 5th VA Regiment heroically in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in NC in 1781, and in Hobkirk's Hill Battle after that. Edmond is listed as being mustered at Valley Forge during these dates.

April to May, 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. John Green, who is later found as commanding the 4th VA Regiment in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Edmund is still listed as being at Valley Forge during these dates, confirming that he was present in the infamous period of cold, starvation and deprivation. He did not desert, as many did.

June to July, 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. John Green, listed as being at Camp White Plains (NY) during those dates.

Aug, 1778...10th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. William Russell, located at White Plains.

Sept., 1778...Same as in last entry, but located at "Camp Robinson's Farm."

Oct. to Nov., 1778...6th VA Regiment, also commanded by Col. William Russell, located at Middlebrook.

Dec., 1778 to April 15th 1779...6th VA Regiment, Commanded by Col. John Green, assigned to Camp Middlebrook, but listed as being on furlough during these dates. There was no action in the winter, and many of the men were sent home on furlough, rather than having to feed and clothe them.

May to June, 1779...Same as last entry, but listed as being at Camp Smith's Clove during these dates.

July to Sept., 1779...Same as above, but listed as being at Camp Ramapo (NJ)

Oct. to Nov., 1779...Same, but listed at Camp Haverstraw (NJ).

Dec., 1779 to Mar 1780...2nd VA Brigade, Commanded by Col. Febiger, and in Capt. John Steed's Co. This winter was as hard as Valley Forge. Edmund was apparently discharged from 3 yr. enlistment in March of 1780.

I got the above from photocopies of actual payroll records I obtained from N.A.

John Terrill Wayland, Jr.

Notes for M
ARGARET WILLIS:
Probably a year after finding the enclosed pedigree lines on Margaret (Peggy) Willis, some intriguing information was found in Pennsylvania archives on November 6,1997.

The fact the information was found in Pennsylvania archives was intriguing alone since a will and other information was found there from the Virginia Historical Magazine. The will was that of Robert Terrill, who died in Orange County, VA in 1786.

Most fascinating of all was an opinion of Sarah Henderson Wiggins, entered after the Terrill will, that Margaret (Peggy) Willis descended from William Willis of Craney Creek, Gloucester County. Not as listed in this pedigree.

The information caused review of the line to find the mistake. The archive of the Family Tree Maker and Latter Day Saints both showed the two pedigrees on Peggy Willis. The latter carried a note in their files that there was a controversy in her pedigree. The review is ongoing with no definite conclusion.

Wiggins opinion--in the Virginia Historical Magazine: As there has been some speculation as to the parentage of Mrs. Perry Willis Terrill and a jump-at conclusion accepted by certain of her descendants. I take this opportunity of proving its fallacy. The tradition alluded to has been given a wide circulation and is to the effect that Peggy Willis, wife of Edmund Terrill, was the daughter of Col. Henry Willis, founder of Fredericksburg. In such statements there is no argument so strong as precise dates for the knocking down of a tradition. Col. Henry Willis died on September 14, 1740 O.S. (dates having to do with changing from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar) and Peggy Willis was born February 25, 1741 her birth just seventeen months after Col. Henry Willis's death.

The pedigrees show (Peggy) Willis born on February 25, 1740/41 which would seem to refute Wiggins following opinion. The two years appearing in her birth has to do with switching from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar.

Another argument that Wiggins uses is the fact that Edmund Terrill's and Margaret (Peggy) first child is named Elizabeth Plunkett Terrill--supposedly being name after her mother. It seems to be a logical conclusion since their second child is name Mary Foster Terrill after Edmund's side of the family.

However, searching further down through Edmund's and Peggy's children is a set of twins named Lucy Lacey and Francine Washington Terrill. Giving rise to the theory that the latter is named after Mildred Washington there grandmother that was married to Col. Henry Willis, causing the plot to thicken.

Her opinion goes on in citing a will and an opinion of Col. Thomas M. Green, who is considered an authority on the Willis Line.
