Notes for S
IR WALTER DE TIREL III:

Much has been written about this man. He was Third Lord of Poix, Second Lord of Laingaham Kingsworthy and Avon. A Baron of France and England, Castellon of Pontoise, 1091. Joined the 1st Crusade and was at the siege of Jerusalem, 1096. Founded the Priory of St. Denis, 1116 and the monastery of Selincourt 1131. Made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1136 and there died. Is reported to have slain King Rufus (The Red) in 1100. Some historians state that King Rufus may have taken the "king's perogative" with Sir Walter's wife while Walter was on a lengthy crusade. At any rate, the two of them were hunting in the forest alone and Sir Walter's arrow found its way into King Rufus. The king was so unpopular among his subjects that it is reported that his body lay in the woods for quite some time before anyone would go after it. Sir Walter probably had to beat a retreat back to France (Normandy), but apparently later returned to England. He was without a doubt a brave warrior and a staunch Christian, and it would be hard to believe that he would murder the king, disgusted as he may have been about the king's un-Christian behavior. But, who knows.
