3. WILLIAM3 HAMLIN (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born July 9, 1791 in Lewis County, Kentucky, and died November 25, 1837 in Lewis County, Kentucky. He married MARY SMITH February 3, 1811 in Lewis County, Kentucky, daughter of JAMES SMITH and SARAH GOULDER. She was born May 21, 1786 in New Jersey, and died June 30, 1886 in Bowen, Audubon, Iowa.
Notes for WILLIAM HAMLIN:
During the War of 1812, William Hamlin served in Captain Seward's company, under Col. Richard Johnson, in the command of Gen. Shelby of Kentucky.
William fought in the Battle of Thames, on October 15, 1818, with his father John and half brother James Larol or Lard.
William told his son Nathaniel that after Tecumsah was killed in that battle, he took his headdress and tomahawk as a prize of war. The items were lost or stolen when they came back from Canada.
William, also a strong man, had black eyes, and a red beard.
He served under Seward from August 28 to November 3, 1813, according to the United States Record of the Pension Bureau.
Notes for MARY SMITH:
Mary Smith came to Audubon County in 1851 after her husbands death. She located the land warrant for the military service of her husband on the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of section 7, and the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter and the southwest quarter of section 8, township 77, range36 on Buck Creek, now Pymosa township, Cass County, IA. A patent was issued to her for the same on September 20, 1862, signed by Abraham Lincoln, President.
Nathaniel built a one room cabin on his own land about 20 feet from his own home shere she gathered her treasured belongs and slept, taking her meals whenever able, with the family. She made her home with the family until her death at the age of 100 yeaars, 1 month and 9 days. Her grave site is in cemetery not far from her son Nathanial and his wife Margaret.
