Descendants of John Hamlin

Generation No. 4

4. NATHANIEL4 HAMLIN (WILLIAM3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born March 13, 1814 in Lewis County, Kentucky, and died April 17, 1897 in Exira, Iowa. He married MARGARET TERRILL POAGE April 9, 1840 in Vermillon County, Illinois, daughter of ALLEN POAGE and MARGARET TERRILL. She was born August 12, 1824 in Greenup Co., Kentucky, and died September 15, 1906 in Exira, Iowa.

Notes for N
ATHANIEL HAMLIN:
Nathaniel was the first settler of Audubon County. He stepped off a "squatters claim" of 160 acres near the Mormon Trail, which pretty much runs along I-80 Highway to the Missouri River. They took up the claim in the fall and winter of 1850 and the spring of 1851. In his position along the trail, he did much trading with the emigrants heading west.

He became the most prominent person in the area and helped lead the growth of Audubon County and the finding of Exira, IA. There is a small town and park named for him.

His grave is in Bowen Cemetery nine miles north of Wiota, IA. It is north of I-80 at Exit 61.
The place of burial was found there by me on June 8, 1999.

Lived 83 years, one month and four days.

Notes for M
ARGARET TERRILL POAGE:
Margaret Terrill Poage was the grandmother of Lily Thomas on her mother's side of the family. The name of Lily's mother was Sarah Roseanna Hamlin. Like earlier genealogist, who had did not research the distaff side of the pedigree, Margaret was ignored until now. Her name, carrying two last names, was rather unusual. The reason being that her parents thought enough of the Terrill name of their ancestors to include it in hers.

Margaret Terrill and Dean Williams, her 2nd great-grandson, were both born on August 12. She was born in 1824 and he was born in 1927, three years short of being a century appart.

She is buried alongside Nathaniel Hamlin in Bowen Cemetery near the Mormon Trail.

She was of Scottish dissent.
