John Wallace Leney was born March 28, 1822 in Glasgow, Scotland⁷⁰⁶, and died August 2, 1913 in Smithland, Iowa⁷⁰⁶. He married Mary Margaret Poage on June 3, 1859 in Danville, Ill. (by Justice of Peace)⁷⁰⁶, daughter of George Terrill Poage and Sarah Ann Hayden.

Captured by Rebels at STONE RIVER in the battle of Murfeesboro, Tennessee December 26 or 30, 1862. Confined at Richmond, Virginia January 16, 1863.

Sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri March 11, 1863.(St. Louis, Mo.)

Mustered out June 16, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. He was 39 when he enlisted, per Military record said he was 31.
He was in Co. B 51st Regiment Illinois Infantry.

Started Military pension December 21, 1891 of $12.00 per month later on increased to $30.00 per month till he died. Per Military Pension file he died August 1, 1913 this differs from his tombstone which has 1914 as his death date.
He could sign his name as evidenced by several of the forms for his pension.
