According to a letter from Ronald C. Poage, Robert was an immigrant from Ireland.
On May 22, 1740 sixteen heads of families appeared at Orange Country Court and proved their importation at their own expense and right to obtain lands from the King's bounty; among them Alexander Brakenridge with seven children and Robert Poage with his wife Elizabeth Preston and their nine children, (Thomas Poage was born in Virginia) from Ireland.

To daughter, Martha Woods, and to sons Robert, George and William, and to daughters Elizabeth Crawford and Margaret Robertson, one pistole as a token of remembrance and love.
