Ellsberry's Bulletin says that Benjamin inherited a tract of land in Goochland Co., according to father's will, but did not remain long there. He settled in Albemarle Co., where he was a Capt. in the Militia. In 1776, he signed the "Dissenters Petition" in asking for a "Emmission of Paper Money", and on 21 April 1779 he was a signer of a Declaration of Independence, drawn up by loyal patriots in Albemarle Co., VA.
