Notes for Edward III King Of England: Edward the III King of England, of the house of Plantagenet was the eldest son of Edward II. In 1327 he was proclaimed king by Parliament. His mother was Isabella of France. (1292-1358) Most of the power was held by her and Roger de Mortimer (1287-1330) In 1330 the young king took the power into his own hands, had Mortimer hanged and confined his mother to her home. He began a series of wars, Scotland, France etc. By about 1375 he had become senile. He was completely in the power of an avaricious mistress, Alice Perrers. Who with the help of Edwards 4th son John of Gaunt dominated England, Alice was expelled from Parliament in 1376. But John of Gaunt kept up his struggle for control and with Edwards successor and Grandson Richard II.
