Notes for James IV King Of Scotland: James IV, 1473-1513 (r.1488-1513), was a popular and able monarch who brought progress and stability to Scotland. In 1503 he married Margaret Tudor, daughter of HENRY VII of England. Scottish relations with England deteriorated with the accession of HENRY VIII. James invaded England in 1513 and was killed in the battle of Flodden, in which the Scottish aristocracy was almost annihilated. His son, James V, 1512-42 (r.1513-42), was the object of a struggle between his regents. Held captive, he escaped (1528) and allied himself with France against Henry VIII. He married MARY OF GUISE in 1538. War with England broke out in 1542. James's nobles gave him little support, and his army was routed at Solway Moss. He died shortly thereafter and was succeeded by his infant daughter, MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS.
