Abraham (â´bre-hàm´) or Abram, progenitor of the Hebrews. He is an example of the person devoted to God, as in his willingness to sacrifice his son ISAAC. Revered by several religions, he is principally important as the founder of JUDAISM. He received the promise of CANAAN for his people, who are descended from Isaac. Gen. 11-25. Through another son, ISHMAEL, he is considered by Muslims an ancestor of the Arabs.
