The following is believed to have been written by Marion Meier. Received
from him by James Wiley in 1980.

A Short History of the Meier Family

1804 - 1970

The Following information was given by John Meier (1-1) at the age of 95
years, and Aetna (Meier) Young (1-2-13) at the age of 88 years, also from
accounts left by Cyrene Meier (1-2-11) and Jacob M. Meier (1-2-12).

This branch of the Meier family originated in the vicinity of Whittenburg
[Wittenburg], Germany migrating to the Canton of Aarogon Switzerland in
the first part of 1700, then migrating to U. S. A. about 1852.

The Zeherly side of the family migrated from France to Switzerland,
however, this is hearsay as we do not have a record of when or how they
migrated.

John Meier (1-1) was the first one of this family to migrate to U. S. A.
in about 1852. The Cleveland, Ohio Office, contacted in 1970, stated the
Immigration Authority did not keep records of passports for this period.

John lived in Cleveland, Ohio, working at his trade of shoe cobbler, and
doing odd jobs when he could not find work at his trade.

In the time John was working in Cleveland, Ohio, he saved enough money to
bring his parents to the U. S. A. However, when they received the money
they used it to pay debts. John again saved money and in 1860 returned to
Lupfiz, Switzerland to visit his family. While he was there James Meier
(1-2) and Jacob Meier (1-3) decided to migrate to the U.S.A. John helped
both brothers to finance the journey. After returning to the U.S.A. John
and James saved enough money to bring their parents, three sisters and
one brother to the U.S.A. in 1863. See passport No. 93 for description
and details.

Jacob (1-3) was not much help in saving money. Great Uncle John described
him as a ladies man. Jacob (1-3) lived at Creston, Ohio for a time
leaving a daughter there when he moved to Indiana. All trace of him was
lost.

In the meantime, John (1-1) had walked from Cleveland, Ohio to the home
of his uncle Jim Wherely, east of Fredericksburg, Ohio. Where there, John
set up a cobblers shop in this vicinity. Later, he bought a farm 3 miles
northeast of Fredericksburg at Hogback and spent the rest of his life
farming.

John, being the oldest son, had his parents and his wife's parents live
with him in their later years. His father was quite a trial to him as he
insisted on having a still and making apple jack.

John (1-1) lived to be 95 years of age and is buried in the Mt. Eaton,
Ohio Cemetery.

John Jacob Meier (1) and wife Lezetta (Elizabeth) are buried in the old
Mt. Eaton cemetery, however the cemetery records are not complete or were
destroyed for this period of time, so we do no have the lot number of
their graves.

All the children of John Jacob Meier and wife Lezetta were born in
Switzerland. This family left La Harve, France for the U.S.A. April 13,
1863. The voyage in the sailing ship, encountering severe storms, and a
fire on the ship took about 36 days. On board they carried their
provisions and bedding and did their own cooking.

James (Jim) Meier (1-2) was a shoe maker and farmer, his shop and farm
were on the Guerne and Fredericksburg Rd. intersection of county rd. no.
165. The Ohio Experimental Station [Ohio State University - Agricultural
College] owns the farm at this time -- 1970. The cobblers shop is still
in use as a catch all.

James (Jim) Meier (1-2) married Eliza Ann McCullough in 1864. They had a
large family of 15 children. AS she older children married they would
take the younger children to live with them. Will Meier (1-2-3) took my
father, Jacob M. Meier, (1-2-12) to live with him on a farm at Mt. Hope,
Ohio. When Jacob and his brother Cyrene were old enough, they were
apprenticed to a stone mason, learning that trade.

The Meier family were farmers, craftsmen, and teachers in Germany and
Switzerland and when the migrated to the U.S.A. they continued along the
same lines.

James (Jim) Meier (1-2) and wife Eliza Ann (McCullough) Meier (1-1-8) are
buried at Fredericksburg, Ohio, Cemetery.

The foregoing information from John Meier (1-1) was compiled by Mildred
(Meier) Fisher. The balance by Marion Meier (1-2-12-1)."
