Descendants of James Ross Wiley Paternal Ancestors

Generation No. 2

2. HANS2 WILEY (JAMES ROSS WILEY PATERNAL1 ANCESTORS) was born 1760 in County Down, Ireland1, and died May 26, 1835 in Smith Twp., Belmont County, OH2. He married SUSANNA IRWIN Abt. 1780 in Dunbar, Fayette, PA.

Notes for HANS WILEY:
Cf. "History of Belmont & Jefferson Counties," 1880, J. A. Caldwell

Notes from Elizabeth Blackwood Steiner's mother says there was a headstone in the Warnock Cemetery in Smith Twp., where Hans & Susanna are buried, of Lily Wiley, who died there in 1830, at age 96, wife of David Wiley. No known relationship to Hans, though. Another story from same source says Hans's parents were a Rev. David and Lily Wiley, probably these same two, but unsubstantiated by any other source or reference. NB, if true these would conflict with the tradition that Hans was an escapee from a British warship when he arrived in America in 1778, at Lewes, Delaware.

"Wileys" pre-1800 in Dunbar, Fayette County, PA show a Matthew Wiley and a Robert Wiley.

1830 Census Belmont Co., p. 368 shows:

HANCE Wiley's - 2 at 15-20 years old
- 1 at 10-15 (Archibald's 1st son?)
- 1 at 20-30
- 1 at 30-40
- 1 at 50-60
- 1 at 80-90

JOHN Wiley's - 1 at 15-20
- 1 at 30-40 (Han's 3rd son?)

Accompanying this document was another listing the expenses and assets of Hans, all handwritten. Summarizing here, it appears to say that after sales of "personal chattels" there was in the estate $185.47, added to that "taken by the widow at the appointment" $166.35, for a total of $351.82.

After paying debts of Hans amounting to $39.24½ and funeral expenses of $21.19½, totaling $60.44.

After court fees of $24.57 leaving remaining to disburse $266.81.

There are three more sheets, the first listing names of persons to whom debts were owed and amounts owed.

The second sheet lists payments by "Henry Wiley in acct with R E Carothers" what appear to be funeral-related expenses, including "1 plain casket [@] 62½ [cents]," several pairs of gloves, bolts and yards of cloth materials including muslin, black crapes, 6 pounds of coffee [$1.00], 3 twists of tobacco at six cents, "trimmings for vest," and "1 pr blk silk gloves for Sister Margaret."

The last sheet seems to also list expenses of goods and services, to one John Baugh including mending and repairing farm implements, horse shoeing, and other items - all paid for with 115 pounds of beef at 3½ per pound, and eleven dollars cash, leaving a balance due Mr. Baugh of $6.10.

This sheet or sheets was/were notarized by William Warnock, J.P., February 15, 1837, for probate fees of 12½ cents.

"HANS WILEY was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1760. In 1778 he migrated to America and located in Fayette County, Pa., where he married Susan[na] Irwin. In 1800, he, with his wife and five children, came to Belmont County, Ohio, residing in Richland Township until 1805. Then they entered, made improvements and settled on a part of section six, in Smith Township, where they lived during the remainder of their days. He died in 1835; his companion died in 1838. They brought up a family of eight children, viz.: Joseph, Archibald, John, William, James, Henry, Eleanor, and Margaret; all are deceased except three, John, James and Henry.

"JAMES WILEY, a son of the above names Hans Wiley, was born in Richland Township, Belmont County, Ohio, June 26, 1802. Although reared on a farm, he was one of the early teachers in Smith Township, having taught several terms of school between the years of 1835 and 1840. He married Mary A. Workman, daughter of William Workman, deceased, in 1840. They settled near Centerville, remained two years and in 1842, they moved on the farm where they are now living, it being a part of his father's farm. They have a family of six children, four sons and two daughters.

"HENRY WILEY, youngest son of Hans Wiley, deceased, was born in Smith Township, Belmont County, Ohio, on the farm where he is now living, May 17, 1807. In 1845, he married Margaret Johnston, of Pennsylvania, who was born in 1812. They settled on the old home farm, where they are now living. They have a family of five daughters. He has followed farming as his vocation."

Note: In 1778, until 1780, the area of Dunbar and Union Townships, Fayette County, PA were in an area disputed by Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. To some the area was part of Yohogania County, VA! The Mason Dixon line was established only as far as an area directly south of that area, and the surveyors had to stop, to retreat, because of hostile indians. The line was supposed to be set all the way to the Ohio River, but was not done at that time, so the area remained in dispute, until 1880, when Yohogania County was abolished and Virginia's claims were withdrawn.

Notes for SUSANNA IRWIN:
Of Susanna Irwin's ancestry nothing concrete is known. There were many Irwin's in western Pennsylvania in the 1780's when she married Hans. A story from Elizabeth Blackwood Steiner's notes has her as possibly a daughter of Col John Irwin, quartermaster of the western troops in Rev. War. Nothing found to support this, though.

Another source (unknown source) says her parents were Archibald Irwin (for whom her son was named???) and Sidney Grubb. Also unsubstianted. Just as likely that "Archibald" came from ancestral background of Hans, for that was among the names of the "noblemen" who settled the new Irish estates from Scotland, Archibald, Hans, John, Gawan, [and others] Hamilton.

Note from some source queries if her name might not have been "Suzanne"

Possibly / probably born in Pennsylvania. Another source (Harold Elmer Parrot - see notes for son Joseph Wiley) gives her birth date as 1762.

Notes: This will looks as if it were written by Robert Ogilbee, or very similar handwriting. It does not look like the writing of a frail, sickly old woman of 74 years old. Further, there are two more sets of signatures below those above, written in different handwriting, which appear to be those of John Ault, sr., Thos. Harris (?) and [illegible]. Below those the second set of Thomas Majer and Philip Ault.

Accompanying the will is a document of bond for the executors stating:
