Such a water wheel was somewhat like the reel of a combine, and did not require very much fall of water to turn it. This shaft floated down Beaver Creek and sank in the gravel pit pond. It is either from the Andrew Smith sawmill, built in 1837 on what is now the Watson farm, or from the Henry Newman mill, built in 1838 at the upper end of the Ferrier millpond. At one time there had been 8 water-powered mills on Beaver Creek.

ANDREW SMITH--(Died) At his home in Superior township, December 21, 1884, of disease of the stomach and bladder, Andrew Smith, aged 73 years, 10 months and 5 days.

Mr Smith was one of the very early settlers of this county, having settled in Jefferson township in May, 1835. His first settlement was on 80 acres owned by Capt. A. Scott. The money with which he purchased this land was earned by clearing ten acres of land for Uncle Jacob Boyers, then living on what is now known as the old Tressler homestead.

After making a good opening on that piece of land he sold it and bought another 80 acres in the Oberlin settlement, cleared that up and sold it and bought 80 acres near the center of Jefferson township, now owned by M.L.Mason. On this purchase he erected a water saw mill and later sold it and moved back to Coshocton County. On his arrival there he found the hills much higher than they ever before appeared to him to be, so, after a two week's visit among friends, started again for this county, but stopped over night with an acquaintance near Spring Hill, in Fulton County, then a part of Lucas.

He was pursuaded to locate there. Seven years later, while in attendance on the Tyler murder trial here he bargained with Jacob Boyers for what is now known as the old Smith farm, four miles north of Bryan. He took possession of that farm in 1848, and occupied it until February, 1874, when he sold it and moved to town.

Fifteen months ago, tiring of town, he bought a ninety acre farm a half mile west of Gaskill's Corners, where he has, during the past year, erected a new house and greatly improved the farm, working as if in the full vigor of manhood.

Few men did more to change this wilderness of fifty years ago to what it now is than he did. He leaves his aged wife, six sons and one daughter to mourn his departure.
