"John Matross Hacker was my great-great-great-great-grandfather. He was born around 1763 and he married massie Spread. She was born during 1782 in Virginia (she was still alain when the 1850 census of Bartholomew County was taken). They had 10 children.
John enlisted on March 4, 1780 in Capt Robert George's company of Artillary in Clarks Illinois regiment of the Virginia state troops during the Revolutionary Wasr. This is according to a copy of official records (ie A List of State Soldiers and Seamen who have received Certificates for the balance of their full pay aggreeable to act of Assemby passedon November Session 1781). John received a sum of (L) 54,6,08 on July 15, 1784, for his service.
John didn't fight against the British but fought instead against the Indians on the western frontier of Virginia.
Mrs. Martha Young, Unionville, sent my sister, Ellen some pages from a book called Witherss Chronicles of Border Warfare in the_____of 1985. It seems possible that this information could be aobut our great-great-great-great-grand father, but it hasn't been proven. We don't know much about John, it would probably take a trip east (in the VA area) to look in the records there.

  Notes for Valentine Hacker:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 17, Ed. 1, Tree #0864, Date of Import: Feb 21, 1999]

Valentine, son of John and Massie (Spread) Hacker, was the beginning of our line in Indiana. Having settled in this state around 1830. At first he considered making his home near White River in the Paragon area, but finding it a mosquito infested place he moved east into Marion Township, Monroe Co., Indiana. He was owner of many acres in Monroe and Morgan Counties.

Valentine chose as his homeplace, the land north of Morgan-Monroe State Park. This is a valley with a creek, which to this day is known as Hacker Creek.

Valentine is buried on a knoll close to the creek. There is no stone to mark his grave. The cemetery contains several graves. Several of the graves hold the last remains of slaves.

Mr. Hacker had gone to Martinsville, Indiana, driving a wagon drawn by two horses, for supplies, and was on his way home at the time of his death. Hacker Creek was the road at the time. It had rained, the creek was flooded and he couldn't get through. Being late in the day, darkness had overcome him. He climbed up the hill to go around the water, stumbled over the rock bluff, falling down into the swolen waters, he drowned. This is a short distance from there he is buried on Hacker Creek.

Valentine was of German nationality. He was born in Clay County, KY about 1800. He married Mary Spires in Clay County, KY. Mary was of Irish origin and was born in Tennassee.

Mrs. mabel Hacker in a letter dated June 4, 1974 wrote "Valentine Hacker, son of John Hacker, was a shoemaker and a taylor. He made such things as clothing, coats and pants".
