 Includes NotesNotes for William TEEL:
The earliest record of a Teall(Teel) in America is an entry in the records of a town meeting in Malden, Massachusetts, held on November 4,1681 in which persons were selected to "cut and cart wood for Mr. Chevis". The list of "Cutters ye 4th day" included a Will Teale. The name William Teale appears several times in the town records of Malden, the last being a meeting held March 1, 1713/1714. The vital records of Malden show that five children were born to William and Mary Tealle. A sixth child, William, may have been born in the British Isles. In a genealogy by John Marshall Raymond, " The First Teels in America", the family lore is that the Teels were Orangemen from Northern Ireland. There are no records prior to the town meeting that indicate a further descandant. In the absence of further evidence it appears that William Teel was the first immigrant ancestor in America. It appears that he came to America about 1680. An estimate on his birth date is given at 1660 by John Marshall Raymond. William Teel was a carpenter according to town records. However, William appears to have a difficult time making a living to support his family. During his lifetime he was twice forgiven for debts he owed the town and was given six acres of land on which to build his home. In 1702 the records show that he forgiven a debt that he "was to pay to ye minestar in the in ye year 1699.." There are several other debts to private induviduals that were forgiven. However, despite his financial difficulties he appears to be well thought of in the town of Malden. This good feeling extended to his wife Mary as indicated by a notation in the town records for January 16,1735/1736, the town voted "that the town will do something towards the repairing of the widow teals hous; and that the select men shall repare said hous as they see necessary". History of Malden, Massachusetts 1633-1785 by Deloraine Pendre Corey WilliamTeele was in Malden as early as 1685. In the division of commons, among those who apparently had no claim to recognition, save for charity or some kindred reason, he received six acres in the "Lots laid out on ye land at ye end of ye 300 accres," which he sold to Phillip Atwood of Bradford ib 1706. He seems to have been one who needed occasional assistance rather than absolute support, although he may have finally succumbed and become entirely dependant upon the town. At a meeting, April 1, 1702, it was "vot y ye yeer money yt william Teel was to pay to ye minestar loos jt:" In August, 1713, a small peice of the town's land "on ye northwardly side neer ye end of john wilsons land aboue ye clay pits"--- at the souterly corner of the burying ground lane and the Great Road--- was granted to him and his wife for their use during their lives. Here, being himself a carpenter, he built a small house, where he lived until his death, enjoying the privilege of closing the road and pasturing between the gates. Other favors were granted him. At the annual meeting in March, 171 3/4, his rate of ten shillings "forguien him;" and it was voted:---- Also ye sd Teel has liberty to fenc jn a little cornar of land joining part to mr parsons land and part by Samuel Greens land neer to Sandy bank: so much land as shall be set out to him by: [blank] William Teele died before May 21, 1719; and his widow was continued in his priviledges of gates and pasturage. She was living as late as January 16, 1735/6, when it was voted that the town will do something towards the repairing the widow teals hous: and that the slect man shall repare said hous as they shall see necessary. At last she, too, went down the grassy length of the Sany Bank highway to the grave yard, and others enjoyed the bebefits of the house which William Teele had built. It was voted, March 3, 1745/6:---
