MRS. CATHERINE DOUGHERTY
Relatives here received word late Thursday night that Mrs. Catherine
Dougherty, long time resident of this community, died suddenly at her
home in Columbus shortly before midnight.
Mrs. Dougherty, well known in western Knox County, suffered a
slight stroke in June, 1935, and had been in failing health since
then.About a month ago she seemed to be improving and she made plans
to spend the summer months here with her two daughters.
Mrs. Dougherty is the mother of Jess Dougherty, county attorney at
Columbus, and made her home with him since the death of her husband a
few years ago.Other children include Mrs. Zim Butterfield and Mrs.
Charles Grim, Venus; Ms. Dick Groves, Casper, Wyoming; Mrs. C.
LaPlante, Sioux City, and Charles Dougherty.
MRS. JOHN DOUGHERTY
Venus, Neb., June 10---Special to The News;Funeral services were
conducted Saturday morning at the St. Bonaventure's Church in Columbus
by the Rev. Fr. Salvator, and at Venus Monday morning at the
Z.D.Butterfield home for Mrs. John Dougherty, Monsignor McNamara of
O'Neill having charge of the services.
Miss CatherineMcGrane was born Oct. 15, 1858, at Clinton, Iowa.
When a young woman she moved with her parents to a farm in Carroll
County.On May 1, 1878, at Arcadia,Ia.,she was married to John
Dougherty.They made their home on his farm in Crawford County, near
Manila, Ia., and later resided in Sioux City and Chrerokee County
Iowa, until 1893 when they moved to Knox County near Venus.
From 1908 until 1911 they lived at Hot Springs, S.D., and then
returned to their farm near Venus.
In 1922 they retired from an active life and moved to Omaha to
make their home while their youngest son, Jesse L. Dougherty attended
Creighton University.In 1926 they moved to Columbus to make their
home and spent the remainder of their life there with the exception of
1927 and 1928 when they lived at Madison.
On May 1, 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary at Oak View Park near Venus.Mr. Dougherty died
Sept. 21,1932.
She had been in ill health the past two years, suffering at
intervals with heart trouble.
Surviving relatives include four daughters, Mrs. Charles Grim and
Mrs. Z.G.Butterfield, Venus; Mrs. R.B.Groves, Casper, Wyo.;Mrs.T.D.
LaPlante, Sioux City; two sons, Charles J. Dougherty, North Platte,
and County Attorney Jesse L. Doughtery Columbus; one brother, Henry
McGrane, Sioux City; one sister, Ann Kinney, Sioux Falls; twenty three
grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.One daughter, Mrs. Henry
Hines, and one son, John Dougherty, preceded their mother in death.
Interment was made in the Grimton Cemetery near Venus beside the
grave of her husband.
MADISON COUPLE WED 50 YEARS; CELEBRATE
RELATIVES OF MR. AND MRS. JOHN DOUGHERTY GATHER AT OAK VIEW PARK,
VENUS
Venus, Ne., May 5---Special to The News:
Mr. and Mrs John Dougherty of Madison, Neb., celebrated their
fiftieth wedding anniversary at Oak View Park, Venus, Neb., last
Tuesday, May 1.More than sixty relatives partook of the sumptuous
dinner served at noon, all the children being present except their
son, Charles.
The children and their families present were: Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Hines, Mr. and Mrs. Zim Butterfield, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Grim, all of
Venus; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Groves of Casper Wyo., and Mr. and Mrs. Treff
LaPlante of Sioux City Ia.Their son, Jesse , of Madison, also was
present besides many other relatives among them Mr. Dougherty's
brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. James Dougherty of Sioux City, and
Mr. Dougherty's sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. William Ryan of
Dixon.
Others present were; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dougherty of Sioux City,
Mr. and Mrs. Jim O'Malley of Dixon and Mr. and Mrs. Hoefer of
Coleridge.There were eighteen grandchildren and three great
grandchildren.
Many friends were invited for the afternoon and evening.The
women and older men spent the afternoon playing cards and visiting.
The single men played a baseball game against the married men, the
former winning the game, 17 to 21.Other young folk enjoyed boating
and the playground was the small children's greatest delight.
In the evening all gathered in the dance pavilion and listened to
a program given by the C.E.Grim and two Pospishil families.Everyone
agreed that the side-splitting show was the best they had seen for a
long time.A mock wedding was held after the show, Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Butterfield acting as bride and bridegroom.The merry-making ended by
everybody joining in an old-time dance.
Mrs. Dougherty was born in Clinton, Ia., on Oct 15, 1858, and Mr.
Dougherty in Boston, Mass., on July 28, 1854.They were married in
Iowa in 1873 and moved to Nebraska about thirty-five years ago,
residing near Venus, Neb., most of the time where Mr. Dougherty still
owns a farm.
