1. REV. JAMES MONTROVILLE¹ WILLIAMS was born March 13, 1838 in Waynesville, N.C. Haywood County, and died June 07, 1913 in Paulding County, Ga.. He married (1) ELIZABETH JANE OWEN October 29, 1857 in Haywood county, NC., daughter of JABOC OWEN and ELIZABETH LEATHERWOOD. She was born September 1839 in In North Carolina.. He married (2) RHODA ELIZABETH OSBORNE January 13, 1878 in Paulding county, Ga., daughter of ISSAC OSBORNE and MILLEY. She was born January 13, 1844 in Cobb County, GA, and died February 09, 1921 in Paulding County, Ga..

James was a baptist preacher. I don't know if he was a preacher before he came to Ga., but he was an active preacher from the time he came to Ga. He came to Paulding county in 1873. His first child who was born in GA., was Alice born in June 1875. I think his first wife Jane may have died shortly after Alice birth. On Jan. 13, 1878 he married Rhoda Elizabeth Osborne and had five more children.
Rev. James Williams preached at New Hope Church, in Dallas ,Ga. This is the church where the battle of New Hope took place in the civil war.
New Hope was constructed in Oct. 28, 1848. The members mostly came from South Carolina. It grew moderaterly until the civil war in 1864.
By 1866 the church had become small and inadequate. So while James was preacher in 1877 they built a new building . James preached there from 1875 till 1885, he was the 13th pastor of this church.
In 1886 seventy members moved across the street and started a new church, called the Second Baptist New Hope Church. It's first pastor was James. The church had preaching ,praying, singing , testifying,and participated in the Lord Supper and the washing of the saints feet.
James also preached at Zion Baptist church, this church was constructed Sept. 3, 1905, and had ten called pastors in its history and Rev. James was one.
James was moderator of the New Hope Association from 1892 till 1894. He help start the association when it was organized in 1883. There are 29 churches in the New Hope Association.
James also preached at Cross Roads Baptist church,from Aug. 23, 1879 till Aug. 17, 1901, Sept. 17, 1904 till Sept. 16, 1907 and from Sept 1908 till Sept. 16, 1910. Cross Roads was built Sept. 14, 1861
James help start many churches in Paulding county and Polk county. He was active in work for the lord up to his death in 1913.

In the 1880 census he lived in the Acron Tree, New Hope Dist., in Dallas, Ga. There was nine childern from his first marriage to Jane still living with him. Also one child with Rhoda, his second wife.

In the 1900 census he was still living in the Acron Tree Dist., and two of Jane childern were still at home, and he and Rhoda now have four childern.

In the 1910 census he is living on the Dallas Actworth Road in Paulding county, with Rhoda and one daughter.

From his confederate pension application I learned that he had 129 acres of land, a cow, a mare, a mule, a wagon, and a buggy all worth about $1125.00. He enlisted in the confederate army July 14, 1862, in Haywood, NC. He was honorable discharged May 1863. The reason for his discharge was a disable foot and was not able to preform duty. He was captured once durning the war, and held for a few days, and was released near Knoxville, Tenn. James was last with his command near Morristown, Tenn.

From other records I found that he served on the jury in Paulding county many times. He died in 1913, in Paulding county and is buried at Cross Roads Baptist Church in Paulding county, Ga. After his death Rhoda lived with their son till her death in Feb. 9, 1921.
