Notes for WILLIAM T.(WILL) MCCOWN:
William was sheriff of Polk county from 1936 to 1948. From 1948 to 1954 he worked for Cedartown Police Dept. On July 31, 1954 he was killed by a man he had arrested about 12 noon that day for driving under the influence. At about 4.15 pm eye witnesses told police that Ernest Hackney met McCown in downtown Cedartown. He shot him twice in the chest. McCown was dead on arrival at the hospital. Hackney was jailed and charged with the murder.
