Notes for JOHN DANIELL:
Notes on John Daniell: Educated in Charles Town, SC.Initially took the first trade of his father as a sea
merchant and ship owner. Soon after his marriage he sold all businesses in Charles Town, purchased land in New Hanover (now Brunswick) County, NC, and moved there where he lived until his death. He was described as veryprosperous, wealthy and influential. His children were highly educated in the provisions of their time. Their home was located on Lockwood Folly River where the present- day town of Supply, NC, is located. The area became Brunswick County in 1764. He was a justice of the peace in 1743, 1745 and 1750 and was appointed road commissioner in New Hanover County in 1745. He is on the list of men on dutyat the Spanish Alarm in 1748 under Capt. John Sherard. John Daniell owned many lots in Charles Town and several plantations in North Carolina. His will was dated 23 December 1763. [6] [15]
John Daniell born March 29,1707 died 1764
(Will dated Dec.23, 1763 - executors Feb.1O, 1764 Charleston Probate Court recorded May 31,1768
John was well educated in Charleston, not very much recorded other than already stated. He followed his father's trade being a ship owner for just a short time. Soon after his marriage, around 1738/9; he sold all his business in Charleston and purchased many acres of land just over the South Carolina line in North Carolina; where he lived the rest of his life. His sister, Ann was in Horry County, SC joining the state line. He was described as being "a very prosperous, wealthy and influential Planter; owning many plantations and possessions." His children were highly educated in the provisions of their time. Their home was on the Lockwood Folly River in New Hanover Co. NC This area was changed in 1764 to create Brunswick Co, as it is now called. It is same area as (now) the town of Supply, NC Lockwood Folly river is small, does not appear named on most maps; but from Supply], NC it goes into Lockwood Folly Inlet between Long Beach & Holden Beach.
This family legend was told by my father and I have read it in other family record - many family records have the same and with documents in Charleston, SC "When John was a very young man, he owned a merchant ship he ran to London to bring needed supplies to Charles Town. In those days there were pirates on the seas who stayed close to the ports to capture the incoming and outgoing ships, take all the valuables, then sink the ships if not needed in their pirate business. Coming in from London with a cargo of merchandise, Capt. Daniell saw a pirate ship coming toward him. The wind being in the pirates' favor, the Captain knew he would be overtaken before he could reach port. In those days, sailors didn't wear shoes, so Capt. Daniell had his crew to put on shoes, beat up glass and scatter it on the ship deck. Then they threw out the anchor and prepared for battle. The pirate crew jumped on deck without shoes and the broken glass cut their feet. Then Daniell's crew took charge, captured the pirate crew and their ship which was heavy laden with valuables and quite a quantity of money. Daniell sold the pirate ship and his own, quit the Sea, bought a large plantation, where he lived the remainder of his life. He knew nothing about farming, but as was common in those days, he hired an overseer to take charge." All document prove this old family legend to be true of John Daniell.
The North Carolina Council held at Bath Town March 8,1743, appointed John Daniell Justice of Peace; again in 1745 and 1750. He was appointed in 1745 for Road Commissioner in New Hanover County, NC
John Daniel is named on list of men on duty at the Spanish Alarm in 1748 under Capt. John Sherrard, New Hanover Co. [15]
