A PIONEER’S DEATH

Remains of the late D. Anderson laid to rest

(a newspaper clipping 1885, owned by Cora Ribble a granddaughter)

Our Vienna correspondent writes - On Saturday afternoon, the remains of David Anderson were laid to rest in the McCurdy church cemetery. Mr Anderson, who had reached the ripe age of 84 years was one of the pioneers of Bayham Township, having spent nearly his whole life there. His father, Jeremiah Anderson, went from Nova Scotia to New York in the early part of the century, where the subject of our sketch was born. When the war of 1812 broke out, he took his little family and started for Canada, crossing Lake Erie in an open boat. During this voyage, one of the little girls (the mother of Mrs. Louise Yokom) came very nearly being drowned.

Jeremiah joined the King’s forces and at the close of the war was granted by the government a tract of land east of the village where Robert McLean and S.D. McCurdy now live. He raised a family of ten children (seven boys and three girls). The second son Anthony was married and when the rebellion of 1827 broke out, joined himself to William Lyon McKenzie’s forces and was made an officer. Readers of history will remember that the evening before Mr. McKenzie expected to take Toronto, Anthony was foully murdered by one Powell, an old schoolmate.

When David reached manhood, he married Mis Janet Horton of Vienna. Shortly after, they moved to the farm now occupied by his son-in-law, Mr. Edgar Goodhand. Here the couple spent about sixty years together until Saturday, August 10, Mrs. Anderson passed away after a lingering illness. Last Wednesday, just five days after, the old gentleman also laid down the cares of earth. Elder Bridgeman of Aylmer conducted funeral services for both. Daughter are Mrs. Edgar Goodhand, Mrs. John H. Williams, Mrs. Tibbets, and Mrs. Hazen. Judson, one of the sons lives at Staffordville.
