The name Lithun is used by the descendants of John Lithun who changed his name from Johannes Mikjelson when he came to Harvey, North Dakota, USA from Norway. The Lidtun farm is located in Osterøy, Hordaland, Norway about 30 miles northeast of Bergen. The old name for Osterøy is Haus. The old name for Hordaland is Søndre Bergenhus.
The Block side of the family came from Süderlügum, Prussia (present-day Germany).
The Finstad side came from the Rokosveen and Finstad Stoer farm, Løten, Hedemarken, Norway.

In June of 1998 Renee Wilber (June Lithun, George Lithun, John Lithun) returned to see the Lithun farm. It was a cool rainy day, but after crossing the bridge and driving through the tunnel, the sun came out to welcome her home. What a beautiful place, Osterøy.

John and Martha met and married in Mayville, North Dakota. Moved and homesteaded near Harvey, Wells County, North Dakota. Their 11 children are Edward, Martin, Edward, Mike, Sigvald, George, Julius, Edwin, Alice, Abel, and Koni.

The Bygdebøker written by Lars Martinusson Ådna “Haus i Soga og Segn" Volume 17 Part 1 Gjerstad Sokn, page 341, 26 g shows John Lithun (Johannes Mikjelson) parents are Mikjel Johanneson and Synneva Johannesdtr. at the Litun farm. (Johannesdatter). Also, his sister Agatha (Ågota Mikjelsdtr. 26 h) who also came to America, married Franklin Whitmee Allen and lived in Utah and Idaho.
