Notes for Christian Showalter:

Arrived with his two sons: John and Jacob September 15, 1749 on the ship "Phoenix" - from The Showalter Family History by Portia S. Everett, Published 1964.

"At the courthouse at Philadelphia, Friday 15th, December, 1749, imported on the ship Phoenix, John Mason, Master, from Rotterdam but last from Cowes, England, Chrisian Showalter."

In 1995, I found a scale model of the Phoenix on display in the Maritime Museum in Philadelphia.

Deed Book A, page 236 (Christian Showalter and wife, Catherine 12 Nov. 1750, Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., PA. They gave a morgage to Joseph Sims to secure a deferred payment on two tracts of land along Conestoga Creek. Originally patented by George Brown in 1742 (124 acers) and 1747 (150 acres). On Dec. 13, 1791 Christian and Anna sold 142 to Christian's son John.

Deed Book C, page 156 (Christian Showalter and wife, Catherine) Lancaster Co., PA. John's son, John, built a house, which still stands (1995), along Conestoga Creek. The date Stone above the door is inscribed, "built by John Showalter, 17900." The original home built by Christian is also standing. It is a small stone structure, the smallest of the three just across the bridge over Conestoga Creek.

Will Book G, Vol 1, page552.

Children: Jacob and John. Executor: Jacob Showalter.

Ancestors and Descendents of Ruben Showalter by Lloyd G. Ferrell, Bellingham, Washington. Published in 1980
Origins: Swiss from two Germanic words "Schon" (beautiful) and "walder" (woods) from two places, St. Gallen around Widnau, Diepoldsau and Montlingen and in the canton of Aaruau around Zofingen and Strengelbach.

When Christian arrived in Philadelphia he went directly to Earl Twp. Lancaster Co. PA. His brother, Jacob, went to Whitehall Twp., Northampton Co., PA.

Deed Book PP, Vol2, Page (Christian and Anna)
Records from James and Betty Showalter, Mrs. Ann Freehafer Andersen
Christian came to America in 1749 on the ship "Phoenix". He is the brother of Jacob who arrived in America in 1749 on the ship "Brotherhood" Page11, Lloyd Ferrell Book.

The Maritime Museum, in Philadelphia, has a scale replica of the "Phoenix" on display (1997).

Christian's son, John stayed in the Lancaster area and son, Jacob and family moved to other parts of PA and Ohio.

"The Wenger Book" gives Christian Showalter and Barbara Shirk as the parents of Jacob Showalter who married Barbara Oyer. This is not correct.

"Branches of our Family Tree" by Doris Imler Peterson and Ethel Darby Imler, 1986, states the following, "Abraham Kurtz and Christian Showalter were the first Amish church leaders in Lancaster County." "Abraham Kurtz and Christian Showalter were also co-ministers in Mechtersheim, Germany, in 1743." Both men came to America together on the "Phoenix".

Christian's bible has survived. It was last with the nephew of Mrs. Arthur W. Rice, of Landisburg, Perry Co., PA. See Notes of Christian and Mary Showalter.
