Notes for Douglas Harold Winters:
Rugby veteran Doug Winters of Te Kopuru celebrates 50 years association with the southern Rugby Football Club this month, after playing his first game for the senior side on July 14, 1941 at eh age of 17.

This took place on the McKenzie farm in Turkey flat rdm, against Dargaville Old Boys and doug still clearly remembers the final score,11-3 to Old Boys.

Early in the game both teams were fairly even until just before the interval then Old Boys forged ahead and never looked like being beaten.

A feature of the match was the kicking of Nick Matich. Besides scoring Old Boys only try and converting it he landed 2 penalty goals.

Doug however did not fare as well. He came a cropper early in the second half and was treated by a St John Ambulance officer before being taken to Te Kopuru Hospital.

I can remember it very clearly. Ihad injured my hip and was taken to hospital in a 1939 chev. That was fairly special in those days as there werent that many cars about.
