He was the son of 12. John Wells and 13. Nora Letitia Furness. He married 7. Victoria Grace McMillan 17 March 1919 in Hokitika, NZ.

She was the daughter of 14. Robert McMillan and 15. Mary Agnes Stewart.

Gallipoli-Survivors in Hokitika-Hokitika Guardian

Thirty four years ago, on August 8 1915, the fifth reinforcements of the 1st NZEF landed at Gallipoli. Perhaps the lucky 5ths fared better than earlier reinforcements in that their arrival at Anzac was made unknown to the Turks, who greeted every other reinforcement with a teriffic straffing as they came ashore.

Several members of the 5th reinforcement are at present at Hokitika and our representative sought to interview these old soldiers. He managed to land the Wells brothers Tom and Jim (Potsie) Wells.

Reminising on his experiences Mr J Wells stated that he and his brother remained on the peninsula until evacuated. His most vivid memories of the war of those days was the trek the soldiers had to make to assuage their thirst from the bracken water on the beachead.

Mr Wells regarded the 1915-16 as one worth recording. The troops had a wonderful christmas dinner. This consisted of cold black tea and mandarines on the island of Lennos where mandarines grow in abundance.

It is worth recording that the fifth and sixth reinforcements so helped the badly depleted forces and provided much wanted fatigues to take amunition and food to the forward trenches that the New Zealanders were enabled to hang on until the very successful evacuation was made in December 1915.

Notes for Victoria Grace McMillan:
Victoria Grace McMillan was born at 59 Sale St, Hokitika, in 1898, the 3rd daughter of Robert McMillan and Mary Agnes Stewart.

Made an orphan when her mother died during childbirth in 1900 and her father accidently knifed himself
in 1909, Grace was brought up by the Preston family of Hokitika.

In 1919 she married a Thomas Wells of Woodstock at the home of her birth. She had 1 son and three daughters. Thomas and Grace brought a property at 154 Kaniere Rd where they brought up their children.

When Thomas died she moved into a house in Kaniere when the house was left to the son Jack. She died of a stroke in 1964.
