This is the first census in July of 1870 that lists my paternal great, great-grandparents, Frederick (57; born in Baden, Germany occupation-clothing cutter) and Mary Magdelene Witz (59; occupation-keeping house) living in the 17th Ward, 25th Enumeration District of NYC on July 7, 1870 with their children: Josephine (25), Adolph (20; no doubt my grandfather's namesake), and Rosa (17). The occupations of the children are unclear, but I believe the girls were dressmakers and Adolph was a bartender. The family apparently moved to another area in NYC by December of this year, and apparently was counted twice in the census (see the December 1870 census on this page).
