The port city of La Rochelle, France, was a Huguenot (Calvinist Protestants) stronghold until its bloody defeat by Louis XIII and his Cardinal Richelieu in 1628 A.D. My Devoe (De Veaux) ancestor (see Frederik De Veaux in the family tree) migrated from la Rochelle, France, to New Rochelle, NY in 1675 to escape religious persecution from the French Catholic monarchy (see related links for more detailed history of the Huguenots).
