Brian at Pvt. Paul Witz's grave, Calvary Cemetery
This is the grave of my great-grandfather, Paul Witz, who served as a private in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company C of the NY 9th Voluteer Infantry Regiment (Hawkins' Zouaves). It took me 5 years to find his place of interment. Paul was wounded at the Battle of South Mills, NC, and survived Antietam. He died of the flu 12 years after Antietam (1874) at the age of 35 in NYC (where he ran a saloon), when his wife Barbarba Brenner Witz was 8 months pregnant with their 4th child, Mary. Barbara is also buried here with her second husband Peter Stey. Adolph, their oldest child (my grandfather) went to live with his grandfather, Frederick, after Paul died. The other 3 children stayed with Barbara and her 2nd husband, Peter.
