Jim and Sandy,

Regarding Margaretha's death - I read in my notes that my cousin, Jean (Sandy's aunt) told me that her mother (Mary Woerner Manley) said that Grandma Woerner had what today we call Alzheimer's. "She was so bad that they locked her in a room for her own safety." It is a sad and frightening fact that all three of John William's daughters died with this same condition. Sandy can attest to the progression of the condition in her grandmother (my great-aunt Mary Woerner Manley). I know that Aunt Helen lived for a number of years in a fetal state at a nursing home. Aunt Margaret died just this past year at a nursing home. It sounds as if she approached a very poor state, but not as advanced as her sister Helen....Her condition, perhaps, explains the absence of informal photographs of her.

Per Sandy Nolan:

"Another thing that my grandmother told me was that her grandfather(i.e., Anton) would get up early and start the furnace at Scared Heart School before she and the other children came to school and that she would get out of class sometimes to help her grandmother clean the church. I always thought that she meant the Antweilers, but if Anton and Margaret also attended Sacred Heart Church, I could be wrong.

....

Something else that I remembered was that my grandmother talked about was that there were lots of activities at Sacred Heart to raise money before the mortgage was paid off. Grandpop called Quadrilles which she described as a sort of square dance that they used as a fund raiser. She said the children were sometimes allowed to go and watch. Every other thing that I have heard about Grandpop, usually include something about how quiet and reserved he was."

Per Jenean Hall: "my mother, Thelma, has told me that Grammy and Grandpop were very good dancers. They used to dance some at the pavilion at Buckroe Beach and people used to love to watch them. They were such a sweet little couple. Mama remembers them sitting on

the sofa holding hands. Grandpop always called Grammy, 'Girl'."

Comments by Dorothy Slaughter Storrs:

In Spanish American War. Lived on his pension.

Made and lost fortunes several times. He left $27,000 or $54,000 to nieces and nephews when he died.

The children of Charles and Rosa left inheritances to each other, not spouses or children.

He ate fruit from the Arcade (first "indoor mall" in downtown Nashville).

Lived with Clara and Walter (sister and brother) on Fairfax.

Watched the stock market regularily.

He paid $30 a month to Aunt Grace to eat and live with them.

His wife died, (childbirth) and he did not remarry.

Comments from Sarah Green Hardee:

He received a pension from the Spanish-American War.

His wife died early.

He moved to California and fell in love, but love was not returned.

He never worked, but inherited at various times.

He irritated others by bragging and showing off checks.

He lived with Harry and Grace after Clara died.

General Notes:

Godmother of Frank Aloysius Boehm (son of Frank Boehm (w: Anna Blum)) who was godfather of Frank Edward Woerner (b) 08/29/1881

Census records indicate Lena was born in March 1868 in Philadelphia. On FHC microfilm 1289311 of Philadelphia births there is an entry which, despite misspelling of the last name, appears to be that of her birth. While the handwriting is very difficult to read it appears to indicate: Lena Varner (sic) was born March 5, 1868 to Margaret and Anton Varner (sic) residing at 824 William in the 15th Ward (the three given names are too much of a coincidence not to be the record and the March 5th date is confirmed by her Baptismal record. Baptismal sponsor is either Joseph or Josephine Held].

Donna Potter Phillips of "Genealogy, etc." writes:

"Alsace-Lorraine's Cultural Inheritance

Are the people of Alsace-Lorraine German or French? Alsace-Lorraine is a region in the northeastern part of France. It is located on the French-German border and it covers about 12,000 square miles of territory. Switzerland lies to the south and Luxembourg to the north. For hundreds of years, the inhabitants of the territory have been part German and part French. Both Alsace and Lorraine have long been prizes in wars between France and Germany.

In A.D. 300-400, Teutonic bands drove out the Celtic tribes then living in the region. Alsace-Lorraine became part of Charlemagne’s empire in the late 700s, but then it fell to Germany when Charlemagne’s grandsons divided the empire. Both Alsace and Lorraine remained under German rule until the 1500s when France gained control of them. But the people fought all efforts to turn them "French." Then the French Revolution of 1789 brought a change of heart. The Alsatian people became so French in spirit that more than 50,000 moved to France when Germany seized their territory in 1871.

The Germans resented the loss of Alsace-Lorraine after World War I, but regained control of the area in World War II. The Germans then moved thousands of people out of the region and replaced them with Germans, Poles and Russians. The Allies drove the Germans out of Alsace-Lorraine in 1944-1945, and France again took control of the entire region."

John William Woerner-8 (Margaret-7, Joannes Phillip-6, Marcus Sebstianus-5, Burkardi-4, Melichior-3, Joannes Conradus-2, Conrad-1) was born on 31 Mar 1874 in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, USA[199, 207, 208, 209, 210, 211, 212, 213]. He died on 11 Apr 1953 in Hampton, Elizabeth, Virginia, USA.

Notes for John William Woerner:

General Notes:

Per 1880 Census for Delaware place of birth was Pennsylvania

Per 1900 US Census for Delaware dob: 03/31/1874; residence 1012 Pine St., Wilmington with parents of wife

Per Jenean Hall: "John William (or Grandpop as we called him) worked for your grandfather at one time... I think until he had a very serious accident working on an elevator. The elevator fell and crushed his chest. I am told that he continued to have health problems associated with that elevator mishap."

He and family moved to Cape Charles in 1917. His daughter, Mary, stayed on in Wilmington for a year and lived with his sister Lena and Lena's daughter Mary.

Per Jenean Hall: "The year that Aunt Mary lived with Lena (Helena) and Mary Klein, was probably 1917 (the year that the John Woerners moved to Cape Charles, VA.) Lena was about 49, Mary Klein (Mamie) was about 32 and Mary Woerner would have been about 17. Lena was a widow; Mamie was single, and young Mary was a high school student. And Aunt Mary said, later in life, it was her best year. Doesn't it just pull at you to want to know more about the personalities of these people? Lena died not long after that school year. Mamie married a few years later at the age of 34. Here is what Helen's daughter, Lois, told me: "After the war, Mary Klein married Louis Boehm, adopted a boy (Frank) and moved to Geneva, N.Y. There are years in between all this that I know nothing or even how long all this took. Uncle Frank Woerner worked for the Pa. railroad and lived in Fenton or DelMar, somewhere around there. ... He had a son that had twins (Doris and Lois). Uncle Frank is the one that got me a pass and took me to Geneva. There was never very good feelings between Mary Klein and the Woerner family so conversing about them was almost non-existent. The only information given was from looking at old photos. Mary Klein Boehm's son Frank got everything, including all pictures, when they died. The few pictures I have are precious, but are not what you're looking for. He would have all the old photos, if he kept them. I haven't seen or heard from Frank since his father died. The last address I had was Frank Boehm 3920 - 37th St N.W. Canton, Ohio 44718. He might know more, although he was very close to the Boehm side."

John later lived and farmed in Denton, MD. Discontinued farming in 1939.

Magdalena Cecelia Antweiler daughter of Jacob Antweiler and Verena Mark was born on 21 Jul 1878 in Wilmington, Delaware[191, 208, 210, 366, 367, 368]. She died on 20 Jan 1965 in Newport News, Virginia[369].

Notes for Magdalena Cecelia Antweiler:

General Notes:

Per 1900 US Census for Delaware Magdalena had given birth to 3 children, only one of which (John Joseph) was living.

"I have seen the death certificate for Grammy's child that was born after Margaret and Charlie - it was a girl who actually may have been stillborn. I have heard that they named her Virginia. She is buried, unmarked, in the Cape Charles cemetery. Apparently, when the family first moved to Cape Charles, Virginia, Grammy was pregnant. The furniture did not arrive immediately and they had to sleep on the floor. Some blamed the baby's death on that fact. Here's the info from that certificate:

Registration District 652, Reg. No. 70, Commonwealth of Virginia

Sex: Female

DOB 10-4-1917

Father: John W. Woerner born Delaware

Mother: Magdalene Antweiler born Delaware (they spelled Antweiler as Autweiler)

place of burial: Cape Charles Cemetery

undertaker: Conrad Grimmer

date of burial: October 5, 1917"

Per Sandy Nolan: "Jenean, your note made me remember my grandmother's voice and especially her laugh. I too was always awed by her beautiful skin. She told me that she only used Pond's cold cream on it and had for most of her life. She did love to read. One of her favorite books was "The Scarlet Pimpernel". I always thought that I got my love of books from her. I also remember Grammy visiting our house when I was little girl. She always brought her Dr. Pepper's to drink. Grammy and Grandpop were witnesses at my parent's wedding. Since my Dad didn't belong to a church, Grammy always told him that she was going to pray for him. When Dad was baptised at a Easter Vigil Mass 4 years ago, he said Grammy must have had something to do with it."

Per Jenean Hall: "Yes!! I remember the Dr. Pepper's. Grammy used to keep a carton in the floor of her closet and we kids couldn't disturb them. She drank them at room temperature and at 10, 2, and 4 (just like on the label). Grammy loved baseball on television and her favorite singer was Lena Horn."

The Woerners came to the US from Alsace-Lorraine. My grandfather was born in the United States but only spoke German at least until the age of 8 when he became lost in Wilmington, Delaware and no one could understand him -- that resulted in his not teaching any of his children to speak German and of his 17 grandchildren I believe only two of us learned German.
