Here is some background information. It is presumed that John Wolford, Sr., born about 1787, and Mary "Polly" Charles, born between 1791 and 1800, were married sometime before 1815 in Russell County, Virginia.It is believed that Mary was the daughter of George Charles, Sr. and came from the Salisbury District of Rown County, North Carolina. John Wolford, Sr. is shown on the 1835 Tax List in Pike County, Kentucky, in the Peter Creek area, which later became Phelps. Their son, George, born about 1815 in Virginia, was my great-grandfather.He married first Abigail Coleman, who died. He then married Sarah Prater.George and Sarah's children were:Jordon, Letty, Elizabeth, David (my grandfather), Frederick (Uncle Fed),Sally, and William R. (Uncle Bud).George died May 3, 1900.Sarah died March 31, 1901. David Wolford, my grandfather, born June 3, 1856, married Leander Hurley, born April 19, 1859, a daughter of Peyton Hurley and Elizabeth Mounts Hurley.They had twelve children.My father, John C. (Jack) Wolford was the youngest, born November 1, 1903.He married Olga Samson (or Sansom), daughter of W. A. (Anse) Samson, and Mariah Dotson. |
