Notes for James William Smith:
James' father died at an early age, leaving his wife with five young sons. His mother moved to New York taking four of her sons with her while leaving James to live with his grandmother. He went to Normal School in Saint John to become a teacher. He taught in a number of schools including Northampton and Durham Bridge. A number of his own children attended his classes. He was Superintendent of the local Sunday school and also had a class where he taught singing by note. For several years he was Chairman of the Board of Health for York County, NB.
