12. JOHN W.3 MARTIN (JOHN MILLER2, MARTIN1) was born December 24, 1846 in Arkansas, and died February 15, 1924 in Danville, Yell County, Arkansas. He married (1) MOLLY A. (MARTIN), daughter of (MOLLY'S-DAD). She was born 1867 in Missouri, and died Unknown. He married (2) NANCY (MARTIN). She was born 1856, and died Unknown. He married (3) SARAH ELLEN S. TATE January 27, 1887, daughter of THOMAS TATE and MARTHA ROGERS. She was born 1871 in Tate Town, Scott, Arkansas, and died September 1901 in Dutch Creek, Scott County, Arkansas.

Notes for J
OHN W. MARTIN:
!SPECULATION: There is some speculation that Nancy Richardson was the first wife of John W. Martin and is listed with him in the U.S., 1880 Scott County, Arkansas census. See John W. Martin, son of, John Miller Martin, in the U.S., 1880 Scott County, Arkansas census. This is only speculation and has not been documentated. Nancy Richardson is listed with James Perry Ruddle in the U.S., 1900 Bowie County, Texas census. James Perry Ruddle was listed with Thomas Henry Martin in the U.S., 1880 Scott County, Arkansas census. Thomas Henry Martin is the brother to John W. Martin and James Perry Ruddle is their first cousin. It is assumed that John W. Martin's first wife, Nancy, ran off with James Perry Ruddle, and they moved to Bowie County, Texas. Future research will prove this out.

!BIO: Information from Carolyn Ann (Martin) Sue, Rt. 1, Box 112, Lockney, Texas 79241., she writes the following about her family.; Martin Family Stories. Daddy [Will Massie Martin] has always said his father didn't say much about his family, but I will tell what I have heard him tell. Thomas Henry Martin had 2 brothers Jack & Bill. The best I can figure Jack would be John W. "Jack" Martin and Bill would be William Wilson "Bill" Martin. Tom [Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin] and Jack [John W. "Jack" Martin] fought in the Civil war. Jack came to visit in Floyd County & left his Civil war rifle & Daddy played with it and tore it up. I have no record of either. Bill [William Wilson "Bill" Martin] owned land in Floyd County, Texas. N.E. of Floydada close to South Plains. Tom [Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin] had taken his boys, John [John Millard Martin] & Wes [Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin] to the store of his father in Arkansas. He, [John Miller Martin] told Tom to "get them boys out of here before they tear something up." There was never anything said about divorce between Tom [Thomas Henry "Tom" Maritn] & Melissa [Melissa Margaret (Self) Martin], I had always assumed she had died maybe in a childbirth as so many others did. There was a baby died & he had an extra thumb on one hand. Tom [Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin], Martha [ Martha Elizabeth (Britt) Martin] & family moved to Texas, maybe Brown County, around 1885. It was always said John John Millard Martin] & Wes [Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin] lived with them. They moved to Floyd County, Texas around 1891. When Wes [Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin] was about 16 years old his step-mother, Martha [Martha Elizabeth (Britt) Martin] told him to go feed the horses and this made him mad so he went back to Arkansas. This would be about 1887 about the time you found the "Guardian Bound" appointing Spencer Self guardian, Spencer was his mother's brother. Wes [Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin] married Sallie Berry in Vernon, Texas 18 June 1891. I have marriage license. The article I wrote about T.H. Martin was in the Floyd County, Hesperian Floydada, Texas.\

!BIO: John W. MARTIN (Supplied by Joseph C. "Joe" TATE via GEDCOM) Some time before 1887 John W. MARTIN had been married to a "Nancy" and they either divorced or she passed away as on Jan. 27, 1887 he married my grand father Thomas H. TATE's sister, Sarah Ellen TATE, they had two children Cecil and Lillian, Ellen died when Cecil was about five years old. Cecil and Lillian then were raised by their maternal grandparents, Thomas Jefferson and Martha Matilda TATE. The Eddy County New Mexico Census shows that Jown W. MARTIN married a "Molly" and that they had been married three years.

!LETTER: September 22, 1993., Dear Don, See your query on the Martin's in the last Scott Co., "Echo." [Yell County Historical Society Journal] I am doing some research on the Martin family as my grandfather Thomas Henry Tate had a sister named Ellen who married Jack - John W. Maritn. Two children were born, Cecil and Lillian. Ellen [Sarah Ellen S. (Tate) Martin Freeman] died in her thirties and Jack wasn't able to take care of them so he left them with their grandfather Thomas Jefferson Tate my dads grandfather also, I believe this was at Blue Ball, Scott Co., So my dad and Cecil grew up together, my dad living near his grandparents also. In my research I just become acquainted with one of Cecil's daughters, Mary Ellen, who lives in Dallas TX. She said that her father died in a car accident and that Lillian - born in 1890, died in TX. around 1955. Mary Ellen says she knew very little about her grandparents but that he "Jack" [John W. Martin] had moved to New Mexico and had died there when he was in his early 80's and that he was buried in AR. - Source Joseph C. "Joe" Tate, 30207 154th Ave. S.E., Kent, Washington 98042-4507.

!LETTER: April 25, 1994.; (In/Part) I have a sketch that another cousin Betty Hollowell who lives in Athens, TX., and was the granddaughter of Minnie Tate and Minnie was a sister to Ellen [Sarah Ellen S. (Tate) Martin Freeman], drew while on a visit to Danville, AR. Cemetery and it shows what I would call a family burial plot and John W. Martin's grave is right behind my great grandparents graves and gives his birth as 24 Dec. 1846 died 15 Feb. 1924, only they could't find a marker for Ellen but there was an unmarked grave next to John W. Also there was other members of the family in the same area. Also from the info you sent to me he was living in Yell Co., when the 1920 census was taken... - Source Joseph C. !LETTER: April 1994.; ... I will pass on what she has sent me in the past. She said that her father Cecil never talked about his daddy [John W. "Jack" Martin] very much but told lots of stories about his grandfather but Cecil was only five years old when Ellen died and his father left him with his grandfather Thomas Jefferson Tate and that he didn't see his father much after that. John W. Martin went to New Mexico but they don't know where. Mary Ellen has a sister in Taos N.M., I wrote to her but no response, understand that she is not well at all. When Lillian Martin was a young women she moved to Athens, Texas where she had a cafe called "The White Swan" she did very well and soon moved to an elite section of Athens. When she first went to Athens she lived with her brother and his wife May. Lillian met and married a railroad engineer named Frank Patton. The railroad transferred them to Sanderson, Texas and then to Amarillo, TX. where they lived until Lillian's death in 1954. Mary Ellen was very fond of Lillian and use to go and stay with her as often as possible. She said Lillian was very petite and very pretty, that she started teaching school in Yell Co., AR., when she was 18 years old. That she had married early and that he was a scoundrel and soon divorced... - Source Information Joseph C. "Joe" Tate, Kent, Washington 98042-4507.

!BIO: John W. MARTIN (Supplied by Joseph C. "Joe" TATE via GEDCOM) Some time before 1887 John W. MARTIN had been married to a "Nancy" and they either divorced or she passed away as on Jan. 27, 1887 he married my grandfather Thomas H. TATE's sister Sarah Ellen TATE, they had two children Cecil and Lillian, Ellen [Sarah Ellen (Tate) Martin] died when Cecil was about five years old. Cecil and Lillian then were raised by their maternal grandparents, Thomas Jefferson and Martha Matilda TATE. The Eddy County New Mexico Census shows that Jown W. !LETTER: Dear Don, See your query on the Martin's in the last Scott Co., "Echo." [Yell County Historical Society Journal] I am doing some research on the Martin family as my grandfather Thomas Henry Tate had a sister named Ellen who married Jack - John W. "Joe" Tate, Kent, Washington 98042-4507.
