MORE DESCENDANTS OF THE MYTHICAL ‘WILLIAM THE IMMIGRANT’
Part I William and Mary Jane Womack of Henrico Co., Virginia
The ancestor of most of the Womacks in America today is believed to be William Womack who was born about 1610 to 1620 presumably in England, County of Norfolk. [1] There are still Womacks in that area. On a tour of England in 1970 a Womack store was noticed in Sleaford. William is believed to have come to Henrico County, Virginia between 1630 and 1640. The five sons of William--William, Abraham,Richard, Thomas and John are mentioned in the Colonial records of Virginia as was the ancestral home being Norfolk, England. There were three daughters--Ann, Mary and Jane.
1. William Womack, the Immigrant, born presumably in England, County of Norfolk ca 1610-20; died ca 1674-77 in Henrico County, Virginia; married Mary Jane Allen, a widow. She died ca 1685.
Notes on Mary Jane Allen:
Highly skeptical of the middle name, since middle names were all but unheard of before the middle to late 1700’s.
Children of William Womack and Mary Allen are:
(Not listed chronologically)
2.1 William Womack Jr., born ca 1640’s; died abt 1674; married Jane (_______).
2.2 Abraham Womack , was born 1644; died ? in Henrico Co., Virginia.
Will dated Nov 1732, and proved Oct 1733. Wife unknown. Some believe she might have been Sarah Summerseals, one of the headrights named in his land patent of 1688.
Notes on Sarah Summerseals(sometimes shows up as Summerscales):
While there is no proof seen by me who Abraham’s wife/wives was/were, several of us think it unlikely that Sarah Summerseals would have been his first wife due to the ages of his children. No proof of this either, but we lean toward Sarah Worsham as the mother of his children. It may never be proved for sure.
2.3 Richard Womack I, born abt 1650 in Henrico County, Virginia; died 1664 in Henrico Co., Virginia. He married Mary Puckett, born 1647 in Henrico County, Virginia.
2.4 Thomas Womack, born abt. 1647 in Henrico County, Virginia; died 1697 in Henrico County, Virginia; married Mary Puckett
2.5 John Womack, born abt 1653; died in Prince George County, Virginia...will 1725. He married Mary ?.
2.6 Ann Womack, born 1657. She married Will Puckett
2.7 Mary Womack, born 1659; she married Thomas Puckett, b. abt. 1658
2.8 Jane Womack, born abt. 1662 in Henrico County, Virginia. She married Henry Pugh, Jr., born abt. 1665; died abt 1710 in Henrico County, Virginia.

The descendants of William Womack remained essentially southern families. In the 1790 census there were at least 30 Womack families in Virginia. There were 11 in North Carolina and 2 in South Carolina. Later they went westward to Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri, and later still, they went to the Northwest and farther west. They went south to Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, Mississipi, and other states.
The Womack name is spelled with many variations in the records: Womack, Wamack, Wamoche, Wommack, Waamock, Wamocke and many others. Below are some Butler Co., Ky. spellings:
1810 Butler County, Ky. Census
WOMACK, Abner
1850 Butler County, Ky. Census
WOMACK, Abraham
Butler County Births 1850-1860
3 Oct 1852 WAMMACK, Wm. M. son of WAMMACK, Abraham
14 Oct 1854 WAMMIC, Elizabeth dau. of WAMMIC, A.
20 Sep 1859 WAMMICK, Elizabeth C.E. dau. of WAMMICK, Jas.A.L.
These people were members of the same family, which leads me to believe that education didn’t have a lot to do with getting a job as a clerk at the local courthouse..........
The most used pronunciation of the families in North Carolina and Tennessee put the accent on the first syllable as Wom’ack. In a few instances an ‘r’ was used in the first syllable as War’mack.
Note: There is a Womack family in Massachusetts whose ancestry has not been connected with the William Womack family of Henrico County, Virginia. There was a Henry Womack and wife Phoebe Rondall of Massachusetts who had a son George, who was born April 9, 1653 in Accomack County, Virginia. He married Elvira Lansing, who was born in 1656 in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of George Lansing and Mary Afton
Children of George and Elvira(Lansing)Womack were all born in Accomack County, Virginia.
They are:
i Daniel Womack, born 1678; married Sarah Listen

"As daily observation evinces the mortality of mankind as well as the conten-tions which too often succeed concerning the effects they leave behind I have thought proper whilst blessed with the full and perfect enjoyment of my reas-on, to dispose of such worldly Estate as God hath blessed me with in the fol-lowing manner:
First, I lend unto my beloved wife Anna during her natural life the tract of land whereon I now live lying on both sides of Great Guinea Creek with my Grist Mill and still, also all my slaves, stock, household & kitchen furniture, except the legacies in slaves, stock, household & kitchen furniture hereafter devised to my children and Grand Daughter Betsy Price.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsey after my wife’s death all the land I own on the north side of Great Guinea Creek except the Mill seat, also two negroes named Ben & Polly, one good Feather Bed and furniture, a young sor-rel mare and a good side saddle, also two good Cows & Calves two sows and pigs and six sheep, also one dozen pewter plates one dish and two basons, one dozen knives and forks to her and her Heirs forever.
I give and bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Betsey Price two Negroes named--Frank and Tamer one horse and saddle one good feather bed & furniture and such other furniture as I have given to my children now surviving, to her and her Heirs forever.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally Walton four negroes named Hanah, Cilia, Abby and Rachel, with their increase to her and her heirs forever. Also my will and desire is that a bond which I have now in my possession from my son-in-law William Walton be hereafter void and of no effect also I give to my daughter Sally the same quantity of sheep and hoggs already given to my daughter Betsey.
I give and bequeath to my son Charles after my wife’s death the tract of land that I nowreside on the south side of Great Guinea Creek with all the appertenances thereunto belonging including my Grist Mill & Still, also two negroes named Archer & Vilet also such other stock & furniture already given to my daughter Betsey also my Will and desire is that my son Charles shall have the privilege to settle any where or on any part of my land that he thinks fit on the south side of Great Guinea Creek. Also my will and desire is that if any of my children should depart this life without leaving Heirs of their body lawfully begotten that that the legacy given them shall return into my Estate and be equally divided among my surviving children also my will and desire is that [the share of] my grand daughter Betsey Price be deducted out of the profits of my Estate.
My further Will and desire is that after the death of my Wife all remaining slaves, stock, Household & kitchen furniture and every part and parcel of my property that is not before given be divided into lotteries as near of value as possible, and that my children and grand daughter Betsey Price draw for the same and if either gets a lott more valuable than another that they refund such a sum as shall make up the others equal thereunto so that in every respect there be an equal division amongst them or their Heirs.
My further Will and desire is that if the land I have devised to my daughter Betsey shoould bo so cut down, or otherwise injured that it is worth less than four hundred pounds of the present currency that the deficiency be made up to my daughter Betsey, before the last division of my Estate take place.
Lastly I nominate and appoint my beloved wife Anna Womack and my son Charles Womack my Executrix and Executor of this my last will and testament and my desire is that my Estate be not appraised, and I do hereby revoke all other will made before by me either Verbal or Written,In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Twenty fifth day of January onethousand and seven hundred and ninety nine.
