Notes for J
AMES WILSON:
Major James Wilson of Norfolk County, eldest son of Colonel James, was born about 1671 or 1672 according to his previously cited deposition. He was married three times, was father of sixteen children to all of whom he left substantial bequest, in addition to providing for two grandsons. he died in 1756 at the advanced age of 84 or 85, having attained some affluence in his community. In 1702 he was appointed a justice of the Norfolk County Court which seat on the Judicial bench he retained until his death, a period of fifty-four years. He was sworn High Sheriff on 15 June 1711 in which office he also served in 1712 and 1713. He had been commissioned captain of the Militia by 1725 and Major before 1742. He was also a merchant, maintaining "storehouses" on Costin's Island at Great Bridge. By purchase and patent he acquired large land holdings in the area at the head of Southern Branch and on Northwest River. The details of his land transactions are too numerous to mention here.
In his will dated 13 January 1750, probated at the February court 1756, he said he was "sick of body but sound and perfect of mind." To his son Solomon he bequeathed the plantation bought of Henry Tregany in addition to "what he has already received" to grandson Jeremiah Wilson, son of Thomas Wilson had evidently predeceased his father the one hundred acre plantation Thomas had dwelt on: to his son James Wilson that plantation bought of John Coats together with things he had already received; to son Willis Wilson "that plantation and tract of land I bought of Joseph Church adjoining to the land his grandfather Butt gave him with what he already received."" also land at the Great Bridge already possessed by him; to son Caleb Wilson "one half of my dwelling plantation and land;" the other half including the dwelling house, barn, kitchen and smokehouse, to "my beloved wife Dinar Wilson" for life, then to revert to son Caleb; to son Josiah Wilson the plantation and land bought of William_________, 200 acres at Long Ridge, and a lot at Great Bridge adjoining his brother Caleb Wilson, also a negro boy Harry; to son Nathaniel Wilson the two plantations bought from Richard Ellerson and Walter Sikes, also two negro wenches Nan and Tebra and their children; to son William Wilson the land bought of Eleanor Leachley together with other lands and two negros; to son Malachi Wilson the plantation bought of James Smith and the land bought at Mossy Point and 200 acres at Long Ridge; to daughter Mary Butt two ewes and what she has already received. Son Caleb was again remembered by a bequest of "my ware house and the land it stands on at the Great Bridge" and 200 acres at Long Ridge and a negro man Charles. He gave to grandson Wilson Nicholson two cows and calves "in full of his mother's portion;" to daughter Elizabeth "Tinaball" (Theleball) a young steer and other things already received; to daughter Prudence Tatem the land bought of John Fife with the house on it and a negro boy Jonas; to daughter Dinar Nicholson a negro girl Rachel and boy Ishmael; to daughter Affiah Langley a negro woman Grace and boy Jacob, a cow and calf and a young mare; to daughter Ann Wilson 60 acres of land and marsh at Great Bridge, two negros and a feather bed and furniture; to daughter Uphan Wilson (who was under 16 years of age) 100 acres called Edmond's Hill, two negros, a feather bed and furniture and the "first foal from my mare Bonne." His "beloved wife Dinar Wilson" was given four negroes and the remainder of his estate. She, together with son Caleb Wilson were named executors and posted bond of 1000 pounds.\
Major James Wilson must have been "a gentleman of parts" and endowed with a strong constitution. According to tradition passed down in the Wilson family through the late Miss Indiana Young, "he could spring into the saddle at the age of 80." He was the James Wilson of whom his descendant, Miss Louisiana Wilson, writing in 1892, said he was "grandfather to my Grandfather Col. John, and was a large landed proprietor. It is said he had 20 sons, to each of whom he gave a farm, and two daughters." However, she must have been writing from tradition, rather than actual knowledge, since his will names only sixteen children, nine sons and seven daughters, as a result of his three marriages.

Notes for D
INAH NICHOLSON:
Dinah, who was a daughter of William Nicholson, lived for fifteen years as a widow of Major James Wilson who had evidently made sufficient provision for her seperate maintenance. Her will, dated 17 April 1762, probated in November 1771, adds significantly to the genealogy. She left 30 pounds each to her daughters Affia Langley and Uphan Corprew. She then left bequest of live stock and furniture to ten grandchildren
