Find Family
Welcome to the SOBANSKI/CZAPANSKI Home Page. It is thought that this family is descended from a Polish noble family.A family story states that the family descends from a German nobleman who traveled to the lands of Poland in the 1600's. This berger met a Polish Count with the name of Sobanski/Czapanski. The German nobleman married a daughter of this Count and took the name of SOBANSKI/CZAPANSKI.
The oldest reference I have found, to date, is the baptism record of one Andreas SOBANSKI son of Petri (Peter) SOBANSKI and Anna Christina KRAFT dated November 29, 1795 in Rosko, Prussia. This was a catholic church just south of the river NETZE. The baptism record is for a non-catholic even though it was in a catholic church. During this time, non-catholics were required to have their children baptized by the catholic church. There are other references to the name of SOBANSKI in the same area going back to 1689, but I have not connected Petri/Peter SOBANSKI to any of them at this time.
Andreas married Johanna PUHL (daughter of Christoph PUHL) in Follstein, Posen Prov, Prussia, in 1821.
The family operated a watermill on a river at Kottenhammer, which is near Follstein. Most or all of Andreas and Johanna's children were born at Kottenhammer.
Three of their children came to America. First, was Johann Ferdinand CZAPANSKI about 1852 to New York. Next, was Wilhelm CZAPANSKI with his wife, Julia FISCHER along with their first child, Lewis, in 1857 to Baltimore. Finally, Ernestine CZAPANSKI with her husband, August WALNO (VOLLNOW) and her family to New York in 1869. All lived in Kansas with a large part of their descendants living in the midwest.
Johann Ferdinand's descendants, by his first wife, Wilhelmine KRUGER, spell their name, CZAPANSKY. His descendants by his second wife, August WECKWORTH, spell their name, CAPANSKY. Wilhelm (William) changed the spelling of his name to CZAPANSKIY and all of his descendants use this spelling.
All Americans of the name of WALNO are descended from August and Ernestine (CZAPANSKI) WALNO. The true German spelling of this name is VOLLNOW or WOLLNOW.
In Germany, today, we find individuals with the last name of CZAPANSKI. These families seem to descend from the same family as our three immigrants. Research continues in Germany and modern day Poland for proof that connects our German cousins to the American cousins.
