Generation No. 2

2. JAMES ARCHIBALD2 WOOD (DANIEL (DONALD) WOOD (21 NOV1 2004)) was born 04 Nov 1863 in Albion Mines, Nova Scotia8, and died 29 Aug 1938 in Black Mountain, North Carolina9. He married BARBARA CLARKE 18 Jan 1888 in People's Temple, Boston, MA, daughter of JAMES CLARKE and ANNIE. She was born May 1861 in England, and died Unknown.

Notes for J
AMES ARCHIBALD WOOD:
JAMES A. WOOD

After thirty-two years as a pastor in the New England Southern Conference,
and fifteen years in the retired relation, James A. Wood entered into rest at his
home in Black Mountain, North Carolina August 29, 1938. He attended two
of our best preparatory schools at Tilton and East Greenwich, but entered Con-
ference without college or seminary training. Even in his day this was a serious
handicap.

However, he had other qualifications without which education, however great,
cannot produce an effective ministry. His sound judgment, spotless moral
character, clear religious experience and knowledge of the Bible enabled him to
he a valuable pastor from the first. The twelve charges which he served were
stronger and the communities in which he lived were better because of his life and
work. Fortunately some of his earlier appointments were near the theological
school in Hartford, Conn., and he pursued studies there. To one who heard him
preach in his early ministry and after many years heard him again near the close of
life, his cultural growth revealed in thought and in language was a delight and his
ripened spirituality was an inspiration.

Brother Wood was not content to carry out merely the usual routine of a pastor.
He had the vision to see the special problem of a church, the courage to attack
it and the ability to solve it. This was particularly manifest at Warehouse Point,
where the beautiful church, built during his pastorate, is largely a monument in
his honor. He was never spectacular but always dependable. He never evaded
an issue because it was unpleasant. For him loyalty to God included loyalty to
his fellow men, purity of personal life and fidelity to every trust.

James A. Wood was born in Albion Mines, Nova Scotia, November 4 1863,
the son of Donald and Catherine McPherson Wood. He came to the United
States in 1883. On January 18, 1888 at People's Temple, Boston, he was united
in marriage to Barbara Clark. Three daughters and two sons completed this
happy Christian home. The survivors are his widow, three daughters: Mrs. S. J.
Stutts of Black Mountain, North Carolina; Mrs. Warren Gibson of Wakefield,
Mass.; and Miss. Ruth W. Wood of New York City; and two sons: James 0.
Wood of Chicago and Ariel C. Wood of Niagara, North Carolina.

The body was brought to Putnam, Conn., and the funeral service was conduc-
ted by the pastor, Rev. Frederick A. Dyckman, assisted by Rev. G. A. Dahlquist
of North Grosvernordale. The burial was at Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam.

Leroy Snipes used to do yard work for Rev. Wood.
He was short, bald and had a mustache.
Rev. Wood retired before he came to Niagara,
filled in for other Methodist churches.
Mrs. Wood went almost blind.
Ruth visited during the summer months.

A German named Klutz lived in the house before Rev. Wood.
Rev. Wood added onto the house, porches, carport,
downstairs area for Mrs. Wood.

Ariel peddaled dewberries in Greensboro. Used a couple
of black kids and me (Leroy Snipes), went some of the time.
Sold molded berries in Aberdeen to the winery and they
knew what they were getting.

Ariel drove a Model A Ford pickup and sold wood.
Ruby was married to Ariel when he meet them.
Mr. Snipes did not know how Ariel and Ruby met,
but Ruby was very attractive.

Ariel knew how to take nothing and make something out of it.
He bought some white stones and made a fence.
A fruit train wrecked close by and he took the wood and parts of
the train cars and added onto the house they were living in.
When Ariel cut trees, he used all the wood, including the twigs.
Ariel went to Alabama first and worked before Ruby.

Rev. Wood had a light on a pole in front of the house and
turned it on every night.
Rev. Wood had a beautiful bed of tulips by the front door.

Ruth Wood inherited the house.

Ariel and Ruby made an apartment upstairs with a seperate
outside door and stairway and rented it out during World War II.

Maurice and Louise Bowden bought the house from Ruth Wood.
