Constitution: Some four and a half years
ago my two oldest sons, William H. and
Daniel H. Tootle, left my home in Mont-
gomery county, Georgia, for parts unknown.
Since that time I have heard from them only
once-at Cuthbert, Randolph County, Georgia,
in October, 1888. Boys, should your eyes
catch this, write to your old sorrowing father
and almost heart-broken mother. Other papers
will coufer a great favor by publishing this

Dear Jim
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. This time of the year is very busy at the library.
It now looks like William H. Tootle and Daniel Tootle left suddenly around 1888 and changed their name.

I went to the court house and in an old book called criminal docket, I found a listing under October 1887 as listed:

The state vs William H. Tootle, James H. Tootle, Daniel Tootle for assault and battery.

Remarks say: Bond. plea guilty april 1888 sentence No arrest Apr term 1888 Bond
Bond forfeited Apr tr 1888. Absolute Oct. term 1888. cont generally
apr term 1889. No arrest apr term 1888. No arrest april term 1889.
Of adjd ___ Dead docket.

The state vs William H. Tootle for assault and battery.
Remarks: No arrest April term 1889 of adjd ___ dead docket.

I asked the superior court judge what dead docket meant and he said it was used to say
that they had not found the people and that the case was still open.
I will be mailing you a copy of the pages I found. It looks like we found out why
they left Montgomery County and why they changed their name.
