He attended school at Rochester, N. Y., and Oberlin, Ohio. In 1848 the family returned to Rochester, N. Y., where Mr. Ingersoll worked in the offices of a Rochester newspaper. This was preparation for the business which in the early fifties he took up at Hudson, Ohio. There he conducted the printing office of Sawyer and Ingersoll, in which many of the earliest books printed in Ohio were published, and also an important weekly paper of the early Western Reserve, called Ohio Observer, edited by Prof. Henry W. Day of Western Reserve College. Several of the files of this periodical he contributed to the collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. After a few years interval in Greenfield, Mass., he came to Cleveland in 1857, and beginning the study of law, practiced in the firm of Ingersoll Bros. with his brother Judge J. E. Ingersoll. While residing in that city he was connected with the Euclid Avenue Presbyterian Church; afterwards with Cass Avenue Presbyterian Church and then Beckwith Memorial Church. He was at times Deacon in the Church, Treasurer and member of the session. He married January 12, 1855 at Lanesborn, Mass., Kate L. Talcott, born there Feb. 22-1832; died May 24, 1871 at Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of Platt Talcott of Lanesborn, Mass.; married second July 11, 1871 at Cleveland, Ohio, Cornelia Howard Saunders, born March 11, 1841 at Painesville, Ohio, daughter of Alanson and Cornelia (Converse) Saunders of New Haven, Conn. and Madison, Ohio.
