       17. Hannah Lyman, born October 07, 1802 in Torrington, Litchfield County, Connecticut; died May 01, 1887 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the daughter of 34. Caleb Lyman and 35. Delight Wilson.

Mr. Ingersoll was a Congregational minister, beginning his first pastorate in Buffalo; preached also in Lockport and Brighton, N. Y. Lodi and Kellogsville, Ohio and in Rochester, N. Y. He was said by Lowell Mason to be the "sweetest singer in America".

  iv.   Mary Elizabeth Ingersoll, born July 19, 1832 in Rochester, New York; died August 11, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio.

was 2nd Lieut. in the 2nd Ohio Cavalry at the opening of the Civil War. After doing active duty in drilling that body during the summer of '61, he contracted smallpox in the camp near Cleveland and died just as his regiment was ordered to the front. Previous to that time he had been an engineer on one of the railroads running out of Chicago.

Notes from a MS in handwriting of Maria Valentine (Pierce) Johnson, mother of William McKinley Johnson, Jr., original in possession of William McKinley Johnson, Jr., who provided a copy in 1985 to John Paul Woodley, Jr.:

Mac's (William McKinley Johnson, Sr.) grandfather was a minister in Oldsbury, a coal mining section of Northern England. Afraid the boys-sons would go in the mines so he emigrated to America leaving his wife with 2 (illegible) & care of big family until he could send money for passage. One son was lost at sea. He found parish in W. Virginia. Boys went in the mines. Mac's father was born in Oldsbury in 1853. When 9 yrs had a boy working under him.

Grandmother carried a knife under her cape when there was a strike at the mines. Nobody was going to hurt her boys.

Eventually the Johnson Bros. owned the mines & established the Lorain Coal & Dock Co. in Columbus, Ohio. Father Johnson & Uncle Ed had mansions on Broad St. Seven coats of paint on angels & flowers on ceiling of Reception rooms. Large cherry panelled Dining roomwith huge fireplace set with green tiles from Holland. A dozen bedrooms & Ballroom on 3rd floor where my roommate (Nellie) came out.

Mac's mother Mary Zephyr Carnes was descended from the 1st doctor in Virginia. Dr. Aaron Scatterday & Patriot Anthony Russell who lived in Leesburg in 1795 during Revolution. His brother-in-law (Albert Ingersoll) was Pres. of Central Barge Co. on Mississippi whose son drowned in Lake Michigan while sailing. George Lyman a Colonel took Joan to West Point to a hop.

       23. Sarah Ann Crothers, born April 28, 1832; died October 21, 1858.

Mexican War Veteran Dead

Nelsonville, June 25--Alfred H. Carnes, aged 91, died suddenly of apoplexy today. He had been a merchant of this city for almost 60 years and was the last surviving Mexican War veteran of this county. He leaves a widow, four children, 22 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Thomas Johnson, the coal operator, is a son-in-law, Dr. C. J. Shepard, F. S. Shepard, and Mrs. R. C. McManigal, of Columbus, are grandchildren.
