HELMER-HEMINGER Family:
The Philip HELMER family came to America in 1710 during the Palatine immigration and settled in the Mohawk Valley of New York. John G. HELMER was one of at least 25 HELMER men who served during the Revolutionary War and there were about 10 HELMER women who were married to men who served during the Revolutionary War. My ancestor, John G. Helmer, was added to the list of Patriots by the Daughters of the American Revolutionary. After the Civil War, the remaining brothers moved to Barryton, Mecosta County, Michigan, while the sisters remained in New York state. Some of the families eventually moved to Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
Elvira CAMPBELL was born in Massachusetts and married Zebulon HELMER in New York. Three of their sons died during the Civil War.
William Riley HEMINGER was born September 7, 1844 in Ohio and married Almira or Elmira PATTON, born July 22, 1851 in Ohio. The family eventually settled in the Barryton, Mecosta County, Michigan area. Their daughter Rachel married Arthur HELMER.

STURN-GOODFELLOW Family
Bernard S. STURN (1844-1923), born in Baden, Germany, married Matilda HOFFMAN (1850-abt. 1930)born in Monroe, Monroe Co., Michigan. Thirteen children were born to them. Their eldest son, Benjamin John STURN (1873- )married Mima M. GOODFELLOW, 1874-1922), daughter of Thomas and Mary Janet (ANDREWS) GOODFELLOW from Scotland. Ben STURN died in Beford, Virginia at the Elks National Home. Ben and Mima's eldest son Robert married Naomi COFFEE.

CALL-COFFEE Family:
David W. and Emma Celia CALL were living in Longmont, Colorado in 1886 when their daughter Katie Irene was born. The family also lived in Idaho for a time, and it was there that Irene married Frank COFFEE in Meridian, Ada County, Idaho, in 1902.
Irene and Frank had a daughter, Matilda Naomi, in 1904. They parted company when Naomi was very young. Irene married some time later Fred BELVILLE, they had no other children. Frank COFFEE also remarried and had more children.
Naomi COFFEE married Robert STURN about 1923. Their eldest daughter, Violet Bonita (Bonnie) married Ralph HELMER in 1944. Ralph and Bonnie HELMER had four daughters and their eldest, Margaret (Margie) married Roger WOOD in 1965.

WOOD-SHEETS Family:
Charles S. WOOD, born 1842 in Ireland, parents from Scotland and Didame RIER (1851-1895) settled in Blanchard, Isabella County, Michigan. Six children were born to them. Eldest daughter was born in Jackson, Michigan; next two children were born in Canada; remaining children born in Isabella County, Michigan. Their eldest son, James married Mary Hubscher, daughter of George and Mary (Spahn). The Hubscher family came from Scheffhausen, Switzerland and settled in Isabella County, Michigan. Their second son Floyd married Frances SHEETS, daughter of Albert and Maude (DAVIS) SHEETS.
Isaac James SHEETS, born July 22, 1834 near Salem, Ohio, to James SHEETS (1793-1874)and Mary Ann ELKINS ( -1866). He married Catherine Elizabeth THUMA, who was born (1838-1904)in Lexington,Ohio in 1838. Isaac served during the Civil War. Her parent's were Christian THUMA and Mary Ann BEAR. Isaac and Catherine lived in Portland, Michigan. Their youngest son, Albert Joshua SHEETS married Maude Leone DAVIS. They lived in the Blanchard, Michigan area (Mecosta and Isabella Counties).
Harold DAVIS married Abagail BEDFORD. Their son, Samuel DAVIS, married Celestia Rowlingson.

  • Zebulon Montgomery Pike Helmer (16 KB)
    Zebulon was born July 29, 1813 in Eagle, New York. He was named after the celebrated US Army Lieutenant Montgomery Pike who discovered Pikes Peak in Colorado. Zebulon died September 16, 1864 in Eagle, New York. His three oldest sons died earlier that year during the Civil War.
  • Elvira Campbell Helmer (28 KB)
    Elvira, daughter of William Campbell and Betsey Pool, March 6, 1820-February 12, 1910 in Lakeview, Montcalm Co, Michigan. She is buried next to Zebulon in Elmwood Cemetery, Pike, New York. When Zebulon died in 1864, she had nine living children, the youngest three years old.
  • James and Mary Wood (87 KB)
    James Norman Wood and Mary Fannie Hubscher were married January 10, 1901 in Isabella County, Michigan. James was born in Canada in 1877 and Mary was born December 14, 1878, Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Three daughters and five sons were born to them.
  • Mary & Anna Margaretha Hubscher with Aunts (44 KB)
    Mary & Anna Margaretha Hubscher were unable to travel to America with their parents due to a contagious childhood disease. They stayed with their aunts, Martha and Margaret Spahn, in Switzerland for a year before being brought to America.

    Samuel Stuart Davis was born March 13, 1854 in Pennsylvania. He married Celestia Estelle Rowlingson. Five daughters and two sons were born to their marriage.
