Reference 350: Richard EVERETT and wife Mary came from England (probably Dedham, Essex) in late 1635 [another source say 1634/35]. They resided in Dedham, Norfolk, MA in 1636. In1643/44 Richard was among 42 persons at a town meeting inaugurating a system of schools. This is noteworthy since two descendants became presidents of colleges: Edward EVERETT of Harvard and Alex H. EVERETT of Jefferson. In 1636 Richard accompanied William PYNCHON's party of settlers from Dedham through the wilderness to the Connecticut River, to a place called Agwam (now Springfield, Hamden, MA). There on 15Jul1636 he made his mark as one of the witnesses to the Indian deed transferring the land to William PYNCHON, Henry SMITH, and John BURT. Between 1636 and 1643 Richard lived part-time in Springfield and Dedham. He m2 Mary WINCH 29Jun1643 and made Dedham their permanent home. They were admitted to the Dedham church 6Mar1646. The general court made him a freeman 6May1646 and from that time on he served as a town officer and on town committees, and was frequently called upon to lay out lots and roads. He was elected surveyor 1650/51 and was reelected 5Mar/3Jul1682.

Reference 479:29: Richard EVERETT (died 1682), with his first wife, from Essex County England to Cambridge [Middlesex, MA] c1634/35; with William PYNCHON in settlement among the Indians on the Connecticut River 1635. He settled in Dedham [Norfolk, MA]; freeman 1646; constable and selectman; m1 Mary (Unknown) with issue of six children; m2 1643 Mary WINCH with issue of five children.
