John settled on the Duxbury side of the water and became one of the original settlers of Bridgewater.

Until last year (1998), there was another rival for the crown of America's oldest business: C?P? Washburn & Co. At that time the town of Middleborough seized assets of the Washburn family's 11th generation enterprise. The present owners, Charles Parker Washburn III age 82, and his son Charles Parker Washburn IV had not paid nearly $120,000 in property taxes over a ten-year period.

Sir John Washburn, British nobleman, fled to America in 1632 after making what the younger Washburn calls "sassy remarks" about the British monarchy. In the colonies, Sir John and his descendants ran a grain mill and supply store that survived through the centuries.

The family eventually housed the business in a 36,000 square foot granary built in 1899. Known unofficially as the Washburn Mill, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1981.

Big business and the closing of a bridge for two years lead to the demise of the business. Washburns went for ten years without paying taxes.
