Doris Rex Schutte, "George Rex (1682-1772) of Germantown,
Pennsylvania." National Genealogical Society Quarterly, 68, 1980,
pp. 243-258.

Aka Jorch Recks.

George, like his father, was a blacksmith. He built a homestead on land purchased by his father in 1739, located in Heidelberg Township, Northampton (present Lehigh) County, and conveyed by George Rex of Philadelphia County, a blacksmith, and
wife Barbara, to son George Rex of Heidelberg, blacksmith, by deed dated 20 December 1749. "Jorch Recks" represented the Lutherans when Heidelberg Church was organized in 1740. In 1757 he was commissioned a justice of the peace. On 1 March
1758 he signed a petition to the government, asking for protection from the Indians and recommending construction of a fort on Blue Mountain. By 1762 his taxes were the highest of any landowner in Heidelberg Township. At the time of his death
he owned 519 acres valued at £1,107.10.0. He is said to have been buried on the homestead. A petition filed 17 March 1773 states that he died intestate "some time ago," leaving a widow and eight children, three of whom requested the
appointment of guardians. George and Daniel Knouse, the widow's brothers, were appointed guardians of Daniel, Catherine, and Salome. His widow Margaretha continued to sponsor her grandchildren at their baptisms in the Heidelberg Church. Her
death is not recorded, and no gravestones mark their graves.

As mentioned earlier, George was instrumental in the formation of the Heidelberg Church. His name appears as witness and various other places in "History of Hedielberg Church." The following is an excerpt from that book:

As to the Lutheran families, the earliest and one of the largest is the Rex family. If one looks at the old property maps of northern Lehigh County one will notice that in the early days, between Heidelberg Church and the Lehigh River, what
did not belong to the Bloss family belonged to the Rex family. The ancestor of the Rex family is Georg Rex who came to Germantown so early that no definite record has been located. The original name was Ruger and was changed to its Latin form
— a custom which at one time was popular among certain classes. Part of the family remained in the Germantown area and today one still finds Rex gravestone in the old St. Michael's burial ground there. Georg Rex, who came to Heidelberg in
about 1739, was one of the first white men to settle here. The George that came here was probably of the second generation. He was already well acquainted with English customs and the English language and became the first Justice of the Peace
in Heidelberg.

Aka William Rüger

Second son of Hans Jürg and Barbara Rex was born at Germantown circa 1721-2, and died in Heidelberg Township, Northampton (now Lehigh) County shortly after 9 February 1776 (the date of his will). Wilhelm Rüger and Margaretha Rupert were
married 7 May 1745, according to the register of St. Michael's Church at Germantown, of which they continued to be communicants.

Wilhelm first lived in Springfield on the 50 acres purchased by his father in 1743 from the sons of Herman Grothausen. In about 1753 he purchased land in Northampton County from Christopher Ottinger. In 1758 he sold his Springfield holdings
to Christoper Lentz and migrated north to join his brothers Georg and Jacob in the upper part of Heidelberg Township, where he remained for the rest of his life. His will was made 9 February 1776 when he was "very ill and weak." He devised
the homestead with "horses, wagons, and gear and whatever pertains to farming" to his sons George and Wilhelm, mentioned his daughter Barbara, and directed his sons to care for their mother, who was buried by the Reverand Johannes Hellfrich on
24 August 1794.

According to the History of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, William and Margaret had more children than are listed above. They include Mrs. ___ West, Henry, Daniel, Jacob and John.
