My great grandfather, William F. WAPSHALL, was born in Posen province, Prussia on 10-Dec-1854. His birth or baptism record need to be located in order to confirm his birth village. His half-brother, Karl Ferdinand WOBSCHALL, was born on 25-Jul-1844 in what is now Stepuchowo, Wagrowiec, Wielkopolskie, Poland located at North 52.80º East 17.40º. It is about 28 miles NE of Poznan, Poland. It is east of Wagrowiec (was Wongrowitz) and west of Znin. William’s sister, Carolina, was born on 26-Dec-1851 in Budziejewo (N 52.72º E 17.30º). The father of all three was Julius WOBSCHALL. I have no further information about Julius and he most likely died in Posen around 1857.

Karl’s mother was Justine WENTZEL (widow of Johann PLAGENZ). William and Carolina's mother was Rosalie WENZEL. She later married Michael SEEMANN in 1857 in Golaszewo (N 52.75º E 17.42º). Rosalie, Michael, William, Carolina and William's half-siblings Emil and Bertha SEEMAN traveled on the ship "Mast Jenny" from Bremen arriving in NY on 31-Aug-1869. They settled in Toledo, OH. Karl lived nearby until he moved to Berlin, WI around 1880.

Karl and his wife, Karoline HARTZKE Wobschall (widow of August ZUEHLKE) arrived on the ship "Neptune" from Bremen to New York on 06-Jul-1870. They were accompanied by her daughter (his stepdaughter and my great grandmother), Amelia ZUEHLKE who was born on 13-Feb-1866 in Posen province. She married William WAPSHALL in 1881 near Toledo, OH. Some of her siblings moved to Berlin, WI.

In the mid-1800’s, several WOBSCHALL families lived in or near Margonin (N 52.97º E 17.10º), Radwonke and Samotschin, Posen which are about 24 miles north of Stepuchowo. Their descendants settled primarily in Indiana and Minnesota. Several families continued on to California and Oregon. The relationship between most of these families has been documented but their connection to my family is yet to be confirmed. Other families including a WOPSCHALL family in Connecticut also remain to be linked.

I am seeking information about my WOBSCHALL ancestors who may have several spelling variations including WAPSHALL, WABSCHALL, WOPSCHALL, WABSHAW and WOPSHALL. There may be other spelling variations but my grandfather and his descendants are the only people who have used the WOPSHALL spelling.

I am familiar with vital records from the Margonin area. Birth, death and marriage records from Schokken (now Skoki), including Stepuchowo and Budziejewo, are on Family History Library film numbers 752858 to 752867. These records list several family members but, unfortunately, not William. Rosalie WENZEL’s marriage to Michael SEEMAN is on film number 752708.

I welcome hearing from anyone researching near Stepuchowo, Golaszewo or Budziejewo. I have visited the area and have posted my Stepuchowo and Budziejewo photos at this website: http://www.polishfamily.com/p4e/cities324/346_i.html. I have posted photos from other villages that may offer insight as to what is there today.

My “Family Tree Maker Reports and Trees” postings were current as of 19-Feb-2006 and it may be updated as time permits. I have found it more convenient to post my family information on WikiTree which is updated in real time. I will share my large database of all variations of WOBSCHALL with anyone requesting it. Other names in my family from Posen include BATTIG, HARTZKE, KERNTOPP, POLUS, and ZUEHLKE.
