Marriage Notes for Elizabeth Woodson (Betsey) and Daniel Sharpe Owens:
per notes of Evelyn Goddard:
The Owens home (picture provided) located at the foot of Cumberland Mountain, in the Fincastle Community near La Follette, in Campbell County, Tn.
The Owens home stood at the foot of the Cumberland Mountain, in Campbell County, Tn' near a community called Wells Springs. The nearest town was Fincastle (or one of the nearest). The house was two story log, with stairs going from the back porch to the second floor. Big beach trees surrounded the spring at the rear of the house and at the foot of the mountain. The front of the house faced a meadow and orchard. It was a most picturesque setting. The writer visited the home place about 1946-48. and could still enjoy the setting, though much of the beauty had faded. The main part of the house was still standing, though porches, stairways and ells were missing. The house at the time of the visit was used for storage and had housed hogs.
During the Civil War, soldiers camped in the meadow in front of the house. One of the girls had to ride to mill with corn. Perhaps the boys were soldering or somehow unavailable. She had a fine saddle horse, when she went to get the horse it had been exchanged, and a somewhat dilapidated one left in its place. She was furious, and marched straight to the camp. The officer in charge, found the two who had taken her horse, and returned it to her.
