WADE, SR.: The third son of the secluded Goshen valley to become a hero was Joe Wade. The Wades actually were the first of the three farming families to settle at Goshen. But by the time Joe was a young man, his family had moved to the Walton Woods Road, which then was connected to Goshen by a narrow rutted trail. Joe Wade was shipwrecked on the Sandwich Islands as a young man. By bad luck the shipwrecked crew fell into the hands of a cannibal band, who killed and ate every member of the crew but Joe. Joe they saved because they were fascinated by his blond hair and blue eyes, never having seen the like before. In honour of his fair complexion, the savages made him their king. For seven years Joe lived on the cannibal island, accepting the homage of the savage tribe because he had no choice. For, king or not, they watched him sharply always, fearing he might escape. This, of course, he was longing to do. And somehow he managed to build a rough boat, which he concealed near the beach until one evening when he saw a sail in the distance. The natives were sleeping, but Joe had to wait impatiently until darkest night before he dared push his little craft into the water and row swiftly toward the ship. Even with all his stealth, the cannibals heard him and pursued him in their war canoes. He barely reached the ship ahead of the natives, and the captain told him the ship was becalmed and he must not come aboard, for if he did the savages would follow and kill all hands. Kneeling in his little boat, Joe prayed for a breeze to fill the sails. Miraculously the breeze came, and Joe was saved. Later he returned home and married Martha Smith of Goshen. Wade, President of the Pacific County Pioneers Association gives an account of his interesting career. (From the South Bend Journal sometime in 1932) Benjamin Franklin Wade lives at Ocean Park, WAsh., he is 76 years old, 6 feet 4 inches in height, wieghs 225 pounds, is broad-shouldered, big-fisted, white-haired, and tough as a hickory knot. "I was born in NovaScotia on August 4, 1856," he said. "My father was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall and was of Highland Scotch stock. My mother was 5 feet 10 inches high. "When I was 14 years old I shipped before themast, sailing on coasters from Halifax or St. John to Boston and later sailing between Halifax and the West Indies. When I was 22 I was a pilot on the Bayof Fundy. As you probably know, the Bay of Fundy separates Nova Scotia and New Brusnwick. It is nearly 150 miles long and about 50 miles wide at the mouth. Passamaquoddy bay which separates New Brunswick from the State of Maine is just off the west shore of the Bay of Fundy. If I do say it myself, it takes a good man to served as pilot on the Bay of Fundy. The tide is violent and in heavy fogs you have to be able to smell your way. At the head of the bay the tide rises over 60 feet. I have seen it rise over 50 feet in seven hours. There is a place off Norway somewhat similar, where maelstroms form. The St. Croix and the St. John rivers flow into the Bay of Fundy. Many a vessel has come to grief in the Bay of Fundy by going too close inshore and anchoring. If the holding ground isn't good the high tide or a sudden gale spells disaster. "I followed piloting on the Bay of Fundy till I was 25. My father followed whaling . . . " [his story told under Joseph Wade] "I came here to Pacific County in 1882. I was converted and joined the Baptist church, but later I joined the Free Methodist church. My work as a preacher has been that of a missionary, organizing Sunday schools in remote sections, preaching to lumberjacks, and for a while I served as a boat missionary. For a while I was pastor of the Free Methodist church at Bay Center. Later I was pastor of the church in Seattle for three years. After that I served as an exhorter and conducted revival services from Vancouver, B. C. to Portland. I traveled on horseback, by rowboat and afoot. "On November 15, 1877, I was married to Edith Dimock. We have had seven children. Our son, DeWolf, went overseas with the Princess Pats. Only three officers and 33 men came back. DeWolf was not one of them. He is buried in France. Our son Richard lives in California. Alice married David Golding. They live at Port Orchard. Ruth married Sidney Slingerland. After his death she married J. F. Mason. They live here at Ocean Park, as does also our son George. Our daughter Naomi married Walter Hansen. They also live here on the peninsula. "In addition to conducting revival services and preaching, I have done considerable lecturing on various subjects, including ocean currents, economics and the history and distribution of races. "It is a curious thing that up in Okanogan I found some ancient Indian writing that exactly resembled the tattooing the natives did on my father. There is also similar ancient Indian writing on the rocks in the Tule Lake country in Klamath County. Father had tattooed on his arm a crested snake, the setting sun and some figures that resemble the letters ZEO. They were tattooed in red and pale yellow vegetable dyes. "What became of my father? The whaler to which he escaped took him to the Sandwich Islands. From there he went to San Francisco. He put in a few years in the mines, made a stake, went to Nova Scotia, started a shipyard, where he built clipper ships, married Martha Smith and had five daughters and two sons. My brother is dead, but all of my sisters are still living." HISTORY OF OCEAN PARK, WA: If Ocean Park clocks were suddenly turned back a century, residents would find themselves in the midst of a Christian revival center. I. A. Clark, a man who co-founded nearby Oysterville in 1854, felt that Oysterville was becoming a small boom town without space for religious freedom and tranquillity. He led a movement to create the religious community that was to be called Ocean Park. Much of that need is still being served by the community, as evidenced by a Methodist camp just north of town, a Bible camp to the south and several churches in between. Clark's religious interests reportedly lay in fundamental Christian revival, primarily Baptist and Methodist in nature, as did those of much of the Peninsula population in the 1870s and 1880s. They were manifested in revival camp meetings complete with Bible sermons, singing, picnicking and camping--for all of which the Ocean Park area would provide the perfect home. Clark found that his Oysterville community, which had offered a Methodist church, was soon transformed into a small boomtown by the seafood industry, especially when the final leg of the Ilwaco Railroad and Navigation Co. rail line stretched to nearby Nahcotta, and he began to search elsewhere for a Christian revival center. In 1883 Clark proposed to a group of Methodist leaders that they merge the concepts of Christian revival camp meetings, campgrounds and summer resorts in a huge center west of Nahcotta. The Rev. William R. Osborn, founder of a Christian camp near Ocean Grove, N.J., jumped at the chance and bought 140 acres for the purpose. Clark, who previously had purchased an adjacent 400 acres, donated 20 to the movement and the 160 acres was platted for the Ocean Park community. Osborn and 10 laymen formed the Methodist Camp Meeting Association. Original deeds included several restrictions, including the prohibition of saloons and similar establishments. The evolution of Ocean Park from a revival center to a business-tourist Mecca over the past century, however, has completely overruled that idea. With the aid of the IR&N railroad, which chugged through Ocean Park on its way from Ilwaco to Nahcotta, the new community began to grow. By 1892 it had more than 30 homes and cabins, as well as the Methodist colony, and by the turn of the century the town was bolstered by canneries, stores and a myriad of small shops. The death knell of the "Clamshell Railway" in 1930, tolled by the advent of automobiles, highways and ferry traffic, led to an increase in the tourist industry. Visitors simply climbed aboard their own horseless carriages and motored out to Ocean Park for the sunshine, surf, fishing, calming, hunting and camping. Ocean Park responded with the construction of hotels, motels, campgrounds, picnic areas, restaurants and vacation homes. Downtown Ocean Park development eventually pulled the center of north-end Peninsula business away from Oysterville and Nahcotta. Today, recognized as the most populated unincorporated community in Pacific County, Ocean Park's permanent winter residential count is well above 1,400, many of them retirees--a figure that pales when one considers that an estimated 10,000 seasonal residents enjoy the area each summer. Serving local full-time residents are a bank, post office, markets, hardware, lumber and a myriad other stores and businesses. Including, the memory of I.A. One is Reformed and the other is > Lutheran From the book, History of York County, PA; John Gibson; Chicago; 1886. The following is contained in the Jackson Twp. section-- Reformed & Lutheran Church The Reformed and Lutheran Church, generally known as the "Pidgeon Hill Church," was originally a union church for 3 denominations, Reformed, Lutheran and Mennonite. Abraham Roth on the 15th of August, 1785, deeded 30 acres of land in trust for church purposes, for which 6 pounds, 14 s. & 8d. were paid. The trustees were Barnhart Spangler, Abraham Roth and Christian Wiest. A log church was first built, then the log building was weather-boarded. In 1845 the present brick church was built. The original grant of land was to the Reformed church only, but the other 2 sects were allowed to worship in the church. The Reformed element in this community at the time of the building of this church, was the strongest. The celebrated clergyman, Rev. William Otterbein, soon after his arrival in America, preached to the German Reformed congregation here, and held enthusiastic meetings. The same clergyman who officiated at Paradise and the Dover Churches, ministered to the congregations here. Of the Reformed pastors the following could be obtained in order of succession: Revs. John Ernst, Charles Helfenstein, F. W. Vandersloot, John Umrich, Daniel Ziegler, D.D., 18 years; Jacob Kehm, Jacob Ziegler. Rev. I.S. Wiesz, D.D., is the present pastor. The first Lutheran preacher known to have ministered here was Rev. Albert, who was then pastor at Hanover. Rev. A.G. Deininger succeeded him and preached 52 years. Rev. Daniel Sell, who now has charge of Paradise, Dover and Red Run churches, is the Lutheran pastor. Emanuel Eppleman is trustee for the Reformed congregation, which numbers 160, and Levi Stover for the Lutheran congregation of 120 members, Elder Henry Stouch and John Roth of the Reformed, and Frederick Stambaugh and Andrew Spangler of the Lutherans. One of the best remembered personages who lived in this community nearly a century ago was Hans Adam Wertz, the parish "schulmeister", who for many, many years taught the rudiments of a German and English education to the descendants of the early Teuton settlers of this region. Tradition says "he was very smart." Just 71 years ago, when nearly four-score years old, he emigrated to Ohio, where he soon after died. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jackson Twp. section-- Churches-- Trinity Reformed Church--- In the southern part of Jackson Twp., for more than 100 years, what was locally known as Roth's church, was used as a Union house of worship.....(basically same general info. as recorded in 1886 History by Gibson).....The church erected in 1845 was used as a house of worship by the Reformed and Lutheran congregations of this vicinity until 1888, when the Lutheran congregation withdrew and built a church nearby. In 1892 the Reformed congregation still occupying the old church building, decided to erect a new one. Meantime, the pastor Rev. I.S. Weisz, died and the church was completed and dedicated in 1894 under the pastorate of Rev. O.P. Schellhamer. This building, constructed of brick, cost $15,000. It was dedicated as Trinity Reformed Church, but is still familiarly known as "Pidgeon Hill Church" The congregation contains over 300 members. Christ Lutheran Church was erected about a 1/4 mile north of the original church, in 1888. It is a handsome brick structure, built at a cost of several thousand dollars. Rev. Daniel Sell was the pastor of the congregation at this time. He was succeeded by Daniel Stock, L.K. Sechrist and Fred. A. Geesey, who was the pastor in 1907. The congregation has a membership of about 300. "Charles Milton Heiner" On February 13, 1901, my Grandfather Charles Milton Heiner was born in Armstrong Co., PA. his parents were George Baublitz Heiner & Mary Ann Stengle of Pigeon Hill, York Co., PA. His mother passed away when he was about 1 1/2 years olf on August 19, 1902, and is buried at Roth's Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Grove, York Co., PA. Then his father married Lydia Snyder. George Heiner started the family "Heiner" genealogy. My Grandfather in his younger days spent alot of time in jail for Larceny. At age 13 he left home, he spent 4 years in public school and 2 years in private school. As a boy he was convicted of larceny and sent to Glen Mills boy's private school for 26 months. Then he was convicted of attempted larceny and was sent to York Co., PA jail for 1 year. He then was convicted of C.C.D.W. Felonious Breaking or entering cars, larceny, & receiving stolen goods, he was sentenced to Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA for 5 to 13 years at the age of 18 years old, on August 27, 1919, he was single and had no children at that time. His prisoner number was #B9896. His occupation at that time was a laborer. He was then transfered to York County Prison on October 15, 1923. He then escaped from there. When he escaped he jumped the rails and rode them to Washington State. I would guess he went to Port Orchard, WA. Where he met David William Golding & Alice Minerva (Wade) Golding. They had a daughter named Merry Minerva Golding who was born on August 20, 1917. Her grandparents were Pastor Benjamin Franklin Wade, Sr. and Edith Harriet (Dimock) Wade of Ocean Park, WA. Grandpa took Merry to see a picture show in Seattle, they took the ferry. They missed the last ferry home, so they spent the night in Seattle. Mind you Grandpa was 31 years of age and Merry was 15 years of age. They got the ferry back to Port Orchard in the morning, where Alice was waiting for them. Alice told him he will marry Merry. but, Grandpa had 2 motel receipts for 2 seperate rooms. Alice didn't buy it & insisted that they get married. So Merry is my Grandmother. I guess the date could be May 22, 1932. since he was on the run from the law they got married under the name of Milton, which is his middle name. They lived in Port Townsend, Jefferson Co., WA. They had 3 children there Carlos Larue Heiner, Helena Jean Heiner, & Betty Elaine Heiner. Betty is my mother. My Grandmother wanted to name her first son Charles after Grandpa, but he wouldn't let her. Don't know why, but I think it was because he was on the run. So Grandma named him Carlos which is spanish for 'Charles'. Carlos & Helena were born under the name of Milton, but Betty was born under Heiner. I guess the statues of limitation ran out & they could now use the name 'Heiner'. Grandpa then packed up his family & moved them to PA, where he was orginally from. He saved up enough money to buy a small farm in East Berlin, Adams Co., PA They had a son there named Michael Lloyal Heiner. Mom (Betty) had gotten the mumps & became deaf thru the diease. She was then sent to the Philadelphia School for the Deaf. Where she resided most of the time, coming home for visits. At sometime in their life they resumed the genealogy from his father 'George Heiner'. They spent their lives doing research on the family name. At first Grandpa hand wrote the information. Until my Grandmother saved enough money to buy him a typewriter & microfilm machine. Grandma was like his secretary, when she wasn't busy tending to the farm & her family. On June 19, 1952 they were bringing the last of the hay of the season. They always had a celebration, picinic like, to celebrate the end of the work. Aunt Helena & Uncle Mike were playing in the hay wagon. Grandpa told Aunt Helena to bring the horses in. grandma said, "No, I will do it." So she went to get them out of the field to bring them in. They were hooked up to a hay rake. There were 2 of them 1 was named King & I don't know what the other one's name was. But he was tempermental. There was a a serious storm brewing. Lighting & high winds. This storm was so serious that it broke out about 4:30 and lasted only 10 minutes. It grew dark then terrific wind and severe lightning. It cleared rather quickly and the sun shone. Trees were uprooted and it blew the steeple off of the St. John's Catholic Church, in Westminster, PA. The storm spooked the one nameless horse & bolted, of course Grandma was in the seat of the rake. When Grandma came over the hill, Aunt Helena could see the look on her face, as she tried to control the spooked horses. There was total fear in her eyes, as she knew she had no control of the horses. I would guess at that point she knew she wasn't going to get control of them. The wagon which was hooked up to the tractor was on the road blocking their way so the unnamed horse tried to squeeze thru the tractor and the brim of the road. Unnamed tried to push King out of his way which was impossible since they were hooked up together. A part of the rake caught in the tractor wheels throwing Grandma to the ground, where she hit her head on a rock, she was pulled along the ground for a short distance under the rake. The horses took off & ran towards the barn, Aunt Helena went to see Grandma & there was blood coming out of her ears, she knew it was bad, because all of her life she wanted to be anurse & she worked sometimes for the town Doctor. Grandpa's main concern at that time was to get the wagon off of the road because it was blocking the road. After they did that Aunt Helena told Mom,( which Mom was back at the house taking a nap with Sandy, Aunt Helena's daughter), they had to go & get the doctor & Mom was to put the horses away. The horses were in the barn. Mom said that the horses were easy to put away. Which made sense to me, because when horses get spooked they take off running & won't stop until they arrive back at their barn. Which of course they began to calm down. Grandpa's car was in the shop, so they had to take the tractor into town. Grandpa took Aunt Helena & they drove that tractor around 60 mph to town. She told me, she didn't think a tractor could go that fast. She was scared, because it was dangerous. They arrived at the Doctor's house & she ran in there & said, "Mother needs an ambulance. She is hurt bad." Now she was 16 years olf, so the doctor thought she was over reacting. He didn't call the ambulance until he saw her for himself. Back then ambulances had to come from a distance & to call them it had to be a serious emergency. He drove to the farm to see Grandma. When he saw her condition. He said she needs an ambulance. It took a hour for the ambulance to arrive & they took her to the Annie M. Warner Hospital in Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA, with a fractured skull and severe lacerations of the scalp. She also had contusions of a arm and hand. She was in a coma which she never recovered. she died from a fractured skull and no inquest would be held, on June 22, 1952. she is buried at Roth's Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Grove, York Co., PA. When Grandpa came home he shot King & he then tied up the nameless one to a tree & beat him so badly, when he was finsihed, he said, "Now you suffer like she did." He left him to die. When Grandma passed away, Grandpa continued his passion for the genealogy. He of course had to do the typing & letter writing himself. Grandpa & Grandma were members of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Berlin, Adams Co., PA. Grandma made sure in March of 1952 that Helena and Betty were baptized and confirmed thru the church. A couple of years later he lost the farm & Aunt Helena, Mom & Uncle Mike went into foster care. Uncle Larue met and married Dorothy Shultz and had 3 children together. Glenn Henry Heiner, Mary Ellen Heiner, & Larue Eugene Heiner. All of their children reside in WA. He then married Toddie. He didn't live on the farm when the accident happened. When he graduated he went to FL, then he came back when she died and then went to Washington where Grandma's family was from & learned how to roof. He still resides there today. He has a passion for hunting. Aunt Helena met & married Tiny Short, they had 5 children Sandra Sue Heiner, Marcia Lynn Heiner, Smokey David Short, Mark Leon Short, William Rusty Short. She then met & married Jimmy Albert Godwin, they had 2 children, Jimmy Albert Godwin & Angela Jean Godwin. Sandra lives in Tennessee, Marcia passed away on September 17, 1982 in Longview, WA, leaving behind 2 daughters. Smokey, Rusty, & Jimmy reside in WA. Mark & Angela reside in Arizona. She then met & married Richard Sherman. When she married Tiny she moved to Grass Valley, Nevada Co., CA where her grandparents lived (David & Alice Golding). Aunt Helena now resides in WA and she had successfully put herself thru nursing school, plus trying to raise a family. She is now a head nurse of a nursing home. Aunt Helena trys to keep in contact with the family all around. She was the one that told me alot of these stories. Which I am very grateful for. I really enjoyed listening to the history & I know & understand that some of it was very painful for her to retell. Thanks again Aunt Jean, I love you. Mom ws in foster care with several familys. One was Bossermans of Dillsburg, Adams Co., PA & another was the Helwigs of Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA. Mom met Dad, Ronald Franklin Wotring, who parents were Donald Blake Wotring & Elizabeth Agnes (Bodenhorn) Wotring, of Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA., at school & married him on May 21, 1960 at Zion Lutheran Church, Penbrook, Dauphin Co., PA They had 5 children. Merry Elizabeth Wotring(this is me), Ronald Franklin Wotring, Barbara Ann Wotring, Kerry Ned Wotring, & Thomas Allen Wotring. All of the children reside in PA except for Ronald, Jr., who passed away on July 20, 1974, and is buried in Woodlawn Gardens, Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA. When I was about 11 years old Mom & Dad packed us up and moved us to Grass Valley, CA. That is when I first met my Aunt Helena. We then moved to a farm in Auburn, Nevada Co., CA. which we lived there for almost 2 years. My brother Thomas was born in Nevada County Hospital on March 25, 1972. We then moved back to Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA. Mom worked at the state most of her life & then retired. She still resides in PA, but travels back to WA to visit her family. Uncle Mike stayed at the Loper's (a neighbor of the farm) for the summer, then they sent him to Milton Hershey School for boys at Hershey, Dauphin Co., PA. He then ran away from there and went to live with Uncle Larue in WA where he stayed. He met & married a female and they had one child, Bobbi Jo Heiner. He then met and married Sherrie and they had 5 children. Mary Annette Heiner, Lena Kathryn Heiner, Michael David Heiner, Sean Heiner, & Matthew Heiner. All of the children still reside in WA. He had lost his leg due to a motorcycle accident. they then bought a farm in Winlock, WA. He loved to grow fruit trees & worked on engines. He passed away at home on October 8, 2002 due to cancer. Grandpa then lived at the Hotel on the square in East Berlin, Adams Co., PA & then got an apartment caddy corner from the Hotel. I guess he wanted to stay close to the pub because he liked his beer. This apartment is where he worked on his family genealogy. He just loved doing that. When I was little he would take me to the cemeteries & tell me who was who. He then fallen ill & then Mom took him to live with her at 4 East Pine Street, Enola, Cumberland Co., PA until he passed away on December 7, 1977 at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, Cumberland Co., PA. He is also buried right next to Grandma at Roth's Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Grove, York Co., PA I wished I paid more attention then, cause I sure do have alot of quetions now that I can't ask because he is gone. About 20 years after his death, I was looking for something in my mother's attic & I came across all of his books of genealogy in storage. I said , "What are you doing with these books?" I asked if I could take them & put the information on the internet & she said I could. If Grandpa knew about the internet it would have made him a happy man, for it would have made his search easier. But one thing I do know he has compiled this information the olf fashioned way. RESEARCH, alot of travel, & letter writing. I hope I will be able to put all of his information out for all genealogists to research. I also, Hope to make a book from his information because that is what my grandparents were working towards.
